Actually I think there are anime like that. Well it's usually a cliche line coming from some supportive character about him not being involved in his friends shenanigans as if he was some kind of 'side character in some anime'.
It would be pretty funny to watch anime entirely focused on the side cast... but they would become the main cast that way...

Premise:

>sudden war erupts between adjacent countries
>enemy uses advanced magic to summon demons to fight alongside their army
>entire academy basically politically forced to join their countries' military
And it would be about the war.
There's a few main villains and miniboss squads, most notable of which is a wraith with power to match the professor, a man who cybernetically enhanced himself to be as powerful as people with an organ, and a squad of animal-like demons representing their sin.

A boy falls in love with a girl.

The series would be a comfy slice of life type of show rather than being an outright comedy. It would teach the viewer the basics of the art and culture of bonsai.
