This. Boomers had the hippy "free-love" movement which was an experimental attempt at making everything 'like so totally right', but everything went wrong.
Divorce happened, broken homes happened, then psychological problems happened.
Basically the further you deviate from the atomic family, the more prone to psychological disorders a person is.

When I was in college I was socially awkward but could get girls and had friends.
I'm 31 now and after working a high stress job for 8 years, losing all my friends, my parents, and going through a divorce I'm a mess mentally. I can't trust anyone, almost never go out, at work it feels like I'm just treading water. I'm developing a stutter.
But it's ok because everyone I know is depressed. People outside of America are happy? Really don't believe it.

My girlfriend is Indian. Her parents didn't have an arranged marriage but their love quickly faded. However, because divorce is shameful, they stayed together. They were able to send both their daughters to college and pay living expenses on top of full tuition. My girlfriend's mom and dad are both supportive, great people who instilled values into their children.
On the other hand, my parents are white. My mom cheated on my dad because he wasn't giving her enough attention - she admits she made a mistake now. Regardless, they divorced, I had to live with my mom, she remarried, and I lived in miserable poverty without running water or electricity for years. Both my mom and dad are college graduates with post-graduate degrees and yet I'm $30k in debt already because nobody saved a cent for my education.
That's how white Americans are. We put an undue emphasis on individual happiness and view our children as not being our responsibilities after they turn 18. Not everyone is the same, of course, but that's the general trend. Divorce is perfectly acceptable, for instance, if you're not completely satisfied with a relationship. After all, you have to be happy for you, long-term consequences be damned.

That's the Boomer ethos in a nutshell. Their parents' generation came back from the war and built this nation up. Then the boomers came in and everything was "I want what I want" and they just run it all into the ground because they don't care about anyone but themselves, not even their children's generation.
It's like people who come from nothing and with the sweat of their brow they work hard and build a career or a business and achieve wealth and success. Then when they have children they want to give to those children all of the things that they, themselves, never had. The result is the children grow up to be self-centered, selfish, spoiled rotten brats.

There's a ton I hate about Indian culture but if there's one thing I admire, it's that the parents have a tendency to get their kids to work hard enough to succeed in their own right. My girlfriend got everything she needed and more and guess what? Instead of partying every night and spending her allowance on keggers, she graduated a year early, did a bunch of internships, got a job, and just finished a $70k-per year contract.
Meanwhile my parents are hardly involved in my personal life or academics. My mom was enrolled in a PhD program at an Ivy League university and dropped out to marry her current husband, who makes hardly any money and thrust us into some of the worst living arrangements persons in a first-world country can imagine.
I'm not saying that I don't think people shouldn't be happy or follow their dreams. After all, we only get one shot at living life and there's no use in being miserable for the sole sake of appeasing others. The problem is that our culture, in a broad sense, has little regard for repercussions. I don't believe that a childless couple divorcing is a very big deal. If two adults don't think they've made a good decision than they should be able to reevaluate what they've built together. Unfortunately, many hold that dynamic to be true even when they've created life.
It's ridiculous.

The relative comfort and prosperity of life in modern, first-world countries, coupled with liberal and permissive cultures, has allowed younger generations to focus on trivial concerns and personal pursuits. We no longer have to work for comfort. A person earning the wages and tips of a delivery driver can afford an apartment, buy gaming systems, have a smartphone, travel occasionally, and maintain a used car. Our lives are so easily fulfilled that we focus on on larger ambitions and self-actualization rather than maintaining families and ensuring the prosperity of our offspring.
That's not to suggest that most of us are very far up the ladder. Rather, we've been provided enough from an early age that we think the world is ours for the taking and don't have the pressure to escape poverty or save our children from working in tobacco fields or factories.

Sexual Revolution was a mistake, California was a mistake.
For everything else, it's a real fucking mystery. There's alot of self loathing going on, alot of fake standards not met, just overall excuses for not finding some sort of happiness for what you have.
Some say it's the devil, some say it's Consumerism, some say it's the media, some say it's all the sexualized idols, some say it's porn, alot of theories.
My opinion changes over the years, I get older like everyone else. There's a missing puzzle piece I don't comprehend, when you're 19, people just don't want to commit because they think fucking around is what will make them happy and exciting, but it doesn't explain those older than that. Best explanation I've heard and what I subscribe to now is that most learn the most they do about social connections and how to deal with people during their teens, and unless they continue that education, they tend to repeat the same behavior, forever.
