Well, if you've given it honest effort and still couldn't do it, just realize you're stupid and go do something else. Don't keep trying. "You can make it if you try!" is pretty much on the same level as "just be yourself." Not everyone can be a doctor or lawyer, although a lot of people think they can.

If you haven't given it honest effort either because you're lazy or get distracted or have other problems, you should stop thinking that's not as serious as not being able to do it because you're stupid because you might be able to start trying one day and basically, you're fucked

Because you simplify 2/4 into 1/2 then find the common denominator of 2 and 3 so that's 6 and you change 1/2 into 3/6 and 1/3 into 2/ or get 5/6.

why the fuck does it take me so long to write proofs on exams and such? I don't even know how to practice this alone when most of the time there aren't solutions and I don't know if my proof is correct or not
>>
>>24421663
No. The technique is to go back to the very fucking beginning. Way before derivatives. Make sure you understand EVERY basic concept intuitively and clearly. Real numbers, functions, limits, etc. Then you learn calculus again.

This time, when you go to learn calculus, go SLOW and THINK about the concepts. You aren't just memorizing formulas. You are understanding ideas that are expressed as formulas.

What I'm trying to say is: dont' just memorize the definitin of the derivative. Instead, learn what the derivative does intuitively and use the definition as a way to apply your intuition.

Dont forget. Go SLOW. You have to veryify every little detail in your mind as you read it.
>>
>>24421559
The 1 2/4 + 3 1/3 bit isn't hard with a bit of practice.

1 = 4/4
therefore 1 2/4 = 4/4 + 2/4 = 6/4 = 3/2
3 = 9/3
therefore 3 1/3 = 9/3 + 1/3 = 10/3

To add the fractions, they need to be over the same denominator
In this case, 6 is the lowest common factor of the denominators 2 and 3 (2*3 = 6)

To make the denominator of 3/2 6, you multiply top and bottom by 3 (you could say that you're multiplying one fraction by the denominator of the other fraction)
3 * 3/2 = 9/6
To make the denominator of 10/3 6, you multiply top and bottom by 2 (because the denominator of the other fraction is 2, if you like)
2 * 10/3 = 20/6

In the end, 1 2/4 + 3 1/3 = 9/6 + 20/6 = 29/6

(Yes, you could cancel 2/4 down to 1/2 at the start, but the end result isn't different)

And the whole programming thing isn't your fault, it sounds like the structure of the course is slowing down your practical learning.

>>24420978

because if you look at the function x^2, then the rate of change at any one point is 2x

so when x is 50, y is changing at 100 per x. when x is 2, it is changing at 4 per x.

didn't you learn calculus from first principles? if you just draw on a line on the function x^2 at any one point to represent the slope at that point, the gradient is 2x

look up calculus from first principles if you weren't taught taht

As long as you keep in mind the controversies and limitations of IQ tests, here's a decent culture-neutral one that focuses solely on pattern recognition and brain processing power

http://iqtest.dk/main.swf

100 is plain average, 50th percentile, top of the bell curve shit.

Obviously, this doesn't measure verbal ability at all. Measuring verbal ability is not culture-neutral. However, the test measures exactly the kind of shit you use in programming and IT shit (especially), high-level math where you construct and manipulate your own formulas, other shit that is applicable to most hard science and engineering.

Keep in mind that people might game this shit either up or down by studying resources on Raven's progressive matrices, running the test until they save most of the questions and then going elsewhere to solve them and then coming back to get a high score...it might be negatively skewed due to retards derpclicking through the whole thing in 2m to check if it's real, etc.

Take it with a grain of salt, the number it gives you is just an approximation, you're really checking whether your brain just "clicks" with the problem presented to you and sees an obvious solution sooner or later (within the time limit, of course)

pic unrelated

Visualize a square with adjustable side length and one corner on the origin. As you vary the length of a side the area scales as the square of side length. Think about what happens as you increase side length: The area you add is however much you extended side length along one axis times the total length along the other axis. Times two because there are two sides you're extending that each increase.

You can generalize this to see the same thing for x to any power: There are x sides extending each multiplied by x-1 other sides.
>>
>>24421900
you mean a formula?

d/dx x^n = nx^(n-1)
>>
>>24421900
Take the definition of the derivative and plug in f(x) = x^2.
>>
>>24421916
The differential operator is "d/dx".
Applying it to a formula y(x) is perfectly valid, leaving us with "d/dx y(x)", right? That is the same as "dy(x)/dx".

Now if you define y(x)=x^2 and you substitute the "y(x)" in "dy(x)/dx" you get d(x^2)/dx, which apparently is defined as 2x, for some reason.

>>
>>24421935
i noticed i used pretty retarded notation. x^y is generalized like that because there are y sides that add volume proportional to the product of the other y-1 sides. if you want to visualize this it's just the same thing in higher dimensions. if you don't just realize that if you have x * x * x ... and you increase each of those x's by a small amount the total you've increased their product is that amount times the rest of the x's and you do this once for each x.
>>
>>24420958
>can't understand derivatives
because you skipped the homework where you plug expressions directly into the definition of the derivative
>>
>>24421900
Well, you can caculate those derivatives with the actual definition of the derivative. It surprises me that the supposed math professor didn't propose that.
Take the difference quotient which is defined as the limit for h->0 of (f(x+h)-f(x))/h.
If you do not understand this formula, you have no chance at actually understanding differential calculus

Do you drink or smoke weed a lot? My high school friend experienced something similar - I personally witnessed his decline as he went from speaking poetically and being the most charismatic member of our D&D group to being a full blown schizo who mumbles incomprehensibly 90% of the time. Scary shit, but I'm in another country now and left it all behind

I'm a programmer by trade, "brain clicks" is exactly what you want when you're dealing with problems or other people's code you haven't seen before. I'd say it's even more important than memorization. "I know how to do this shit" v. "I know what this shit does." CPU/RAM vs HDD? lol

A lot of the academic shit they teach in you in school focuses on being clever, which is a completely different kind of brain click than figuring out what the fuck another person was thinking when they wrote something. In school, they try to teach you how to handle a ferrari. In real life, you're in a moving truck, trying to figure out what's in the back while you're driving.

That depends on whether they did it because they're lazy or because they were too stupid to know they were lucrative opportunities and deals.

>terrible at cracking eggs, sometimes the shell gets in the pan and usually the egg whites go everywhere
>can't shave, with a manual razor i often cut myself and miss spots, and with an electric i just never get all the hairs or even close to all of them
>don't know how to load a dishwasher, it seems like i always put the plates in awkward positions
>i really suck at hanging clothes on a hanger, they usually fall off
>suck at cleaning things, i never know what to use (soap? some chemical?) and how much of it to spray, i always get water everywhere
>don't know how to open a roll of coins, i kind of just tear at it for some time until i can get them out
>when i'm working the cash register, and i put in the amount, and when the customers says "oh wait take this change too", i really struggle with calculating how much to give them back. it's really simple math but for some reason my mind just seems to shut off
>don't know how to bag groceries or space out the items well, especially when it comes to cereal boxes

>>
>>24422362
It's obvious, because the derivative is defined as the slope of the tangent in a certain point, right?
So, the slope of a linear function is "dy/dx", right?
dy/dx is the same as (y(x+n)-y(x))/((x+n)-x), ok?
So this also applies to non-linear functions, as long as you're looking at it in a single point.
You can define this single point by having n go towards 0, right?
So you just put the y(x) into your (y(x+n)-y(x))/((x+n)-x).

If you take something like y(x) = 3x^2 + 5x - 6 or whatever you get (3(x+n)^2 + 5(x+n) - 6 - (3x^2 + 5x - 6))/((x+n)-x) and therefore y prime (x) = lim n -> 0 (3(x+n)^2 + 5(x+n) - 6 - (3x^2 + 5x - 6))/((x+n)-x)

The solution is trivial and left as exercise to the reader.

heres my best shot

convert the mixed fractions into normal fractions. 4 * 1 = 4 + 2 = 6. so thats 6/4.

3*3=9 + 1=10. so thats 10/3

find the least common denominator so thats 12.

6*3=18
10*4=40

so nows its 18/12 + 40/12
40+18=58

58/12
divide each number by two
29/6
convert to mixed fraction
6 goes into 29 4 times. and theres an extra 5 left over

so thats 4 5/6. I think thats right

The constant in a format where you can directly see how it distorts things. If x is divided by three before you start squaring it and shit then you take the curve and just stretch it by a factor of 3.
>>
>>24423003
because you only need a single variable to define a circle if you don't worry about where the circle is positioned. that's the radius, or if you like, the circumference instead. draw a straight line. then draw two curves connecting it to a circle

the length of that line is only one variable, and with it you can create any size circle.

you add one more variable, and it becomes 3d. so that's why it's only two

it isn't understanding and handling a situation correctly because he answered in way that most people would find offensive. if you acknowledge he's being a dick, then we have no argument because that's all I was saying.

handling the situation correctly would have been handling it without being a dick

Shakespeare is a hack tho.
The English language is very limited as far as poetic expression goes, due to the extremely simple grammar and low number of words.

I don't understand what you're asking. There's some basic curve defined by x^2 - y^2 = c or whatever. They're just saying that if you have (x/a)^2 - (x/b)^2 = c that you can find the new curve by stretching the old one by a and b. You can convert any constant x^2 and y^2 are multiplied by into that format, they're just showing the most convenient one if you're drawing curves.

I could easily enroll in pre-calc, trig, or some liberal arts trash, but, for me, its just a point of pride. I feel anyone completing their second year should have, at least, a basic understanding of differentiation and integration.

I'll be enrolling for my second go in the spring.

As far as "stories" go, I'd have to go with Master and Margarita, I can't really judge its prose, since I don't know Russian.

English grammar is extremely simplistic, anything that doesn't have a case system isn't even worth talking about as far as complexity goes.
English does have a very elaborate system for time reference in place, though.

>>24423156
English has very few words in general usage.
Think about it this way: Why is there so much nuance in the English language? Because there are not enough words to express yourself literally.

Spatial intelligence is what it sounds like: at its basic level its about how well you can put together shapes and rotate shapes in your mind. In an IQ test, they will often give you a bunch of blocks with markings on them, then show you a picture, and you have to arrange the blocks to match the picture.

I have a lot spatial IQ, so its actually very difficult. There were some where I just plain gave up because I felt like I was incapable of processing exactly how the rotate and arrange the blocks.

Of course, this spatial IQ effects a lot of things, from math, architecture, manual tasks, etc. A lot of people with Aspergers have very high verbal IQs but rather low spatial IQs, which is why they are very good at formal communication, memorization, cause/effect relationships and specific details. But very bad at things like advanced math and understanding abstract/imaginary concepts. Also why they suck at socializing because they approach it like they do anything else

None of that has to do with intelligence though. It's dexterity and how calm you can be in social/high pressure situations.

Not everything is about intelligence.

P.S. you break the coin roll in the middle by hitting it hard on a corner then tear it yourself.

How is chemistry difficult?
What are you having trouble with?

There's fundamentally two things in low level chemistry that are essential to understand, everything else is somewhat derived from those two or trivial:
Orbitals and Stoichiometry.

In Stoichiometry you need to understand how moles works, how to balance equations, how to calculate concentrations and basic algebra.

I don't know senpai. The basics of it just get lost on me no matter how much I try to remember them and then everything is built upon those foundations. I feel like I understand physics because I can conceptualize things and draw a motion diagram or something if something's not making sense, but I just start reading about ions and charges and everything and I want to die cause it seems so fucking simple yet I can't ever grasp it.
