Do you think you can do it over Skype or some other voice call system while I screenshare? If not, I can upload a pdf of the assignment to some sharing site. Its a pretty complicated assignment (for me atleast), but the gist is basically being able to read multiple files, sorting each word in ASCII order and adding a counter for each time the word appears in front of the word.

oh that's pretty easy. You can find out how to do all that stuff online pretty quickly. But generally what you'll want to do is have an array with the words and an array with counts, insert the words in sorted order as you go, and increment the counter instead of sorting if the word is already in the array.

So how do I do that for a file from the argument stream? Do I do it all in a for loop for argv[i] where i is the current file, then a while inside that uses fgets to read through the file and add each word to an array? I'm really lost here. I have been looking up linked lists because I thought that would help, and I made a node struct that stores a word and a counter but I have no idea how to pass parameters to it as a commandline argument.

No, you don't need a linked list. Just make arrays and keep making the array bigger if you need to add more words. Then just store the count for the word in the same index of a separate array.
And yes you will need to loop through the filenames, open each file, read all the lines, etc. Don't do the sorting until after you've read every file

I'm in my 2nd year of civil engineering and although it is kind of interesting, I'm not passionate about any of the shit I'm doing. I don't see myself as a practicing engineer and I don't know if I'm fucking myself over. Deep down I want to be an artist, but in order to survive you actually have to have an income so engineering is what I picked.
