Who /studentloandebt/ here?

>tfw $26k debt
>only make $56k/year, and that's BEFORE taxes
>cheapest rent in my area is $1200 a month if you want to avoid getting hit by stray bullets

How you all holding up?
>>
>>24651022
Yup I'm in a pretty similar situation debt-wise. However I make less money but live with my parents for only $300/month. Having an apartment would be nice in a lot of ways but this saves so much money that it's really hard to resist.

As long as you keep making payments and don't do stupid shit like paying only the minimum amount or missing payments then you'll be ok. I don't let my college debt stress me out because I know I'm paying it off.

I do know people my age (recent graduates) that are putting off their loans though. They're fucking their lives up longterm in order to have more disposable income now.

Yes I really like it. I had always wanted to be a doctor but was completely disillusioned as to what being a doctor's life, it wasn't until I shadowed one where I said nope not for me. I still wanted to do something in the medical field since I didn't want to spend 4 years doing an engineering or 2 years on a masters in science (which I've come to really hate). Found out about optometry and never looked back. It's a relaxed atmosphere, don't have to deal with the stress other medical professionals have to deal with.

A lot of it is literally the same thing every day, which makes it easy but dull - though interesting cases do appear every other day or so which make things not as bland.

seriously, you are literally retarded. i just ran some quick numbers and you could easily have it paid off within 5 years.

$56k/yr gross
single filing, 3.07% state tax, 2% city tax

$1500/mo rent and utils
$115/mo health, dental, vision insurance
$235/mo car loan
$165/mo car insurance + car maintenance + gasoline
$300/mo food
$100/mo tv and internet
$65/mo cellphone
this totals to about $2500/mo in expenses

after all taxes and assuming you put 15% of your gross wages into your 401(k) you will net about $3100/mo.

overall picture is: you're making $56k/yr, putting $8400/yr into your 401(k) plus whatever your company matches.

this leaves you with $600/mo in spending money. $26k @ 5% interest is $490/mo for 10 years.

if you want more than $100/mo in cash savings then find cheaper rent, find a slightly better job, or reduce your 401(k) contributions.

seriously, you are literally RETARDED if you are bitching about not being able to pay off $26k in loans on a fucking $56k/yr """"BEFORE TAXES!!!!11111"""" salary.

He is making over twice his student loan debt per year. That is totally manageable.

Typically if you are making as much as you are debt in your first year you will be okay.

Now if you are an idiot and get 150K debt from a private school for an english degree thats a different story.

How can you not live of 580 a week? All you have left to pay for is food and the rest you should be saving up. Personal finance isn't that hard

I'm out of default now and my credit is still wrecked, but crawling back up at a crippled snail's pace, and I've still got a mountain of debt. Good news is I was able to take one class last semester and get out of probation and become aid eligible again, but I severely doubt I'll be taking out any kind of loan ever again, unless it's the Pell Grant, which ain't even a loan. Should have joined the military or hit a trade school straight out of high school instead of falling for the college is where you're supposed to go meme.

tl;dr: Student loans destroyed me. Say no to them.

The payment calculator says I'll probably pay about $160 a month
What you pay?

Taxes (with no deductions, most people have at least some) would be 7320 a year, so his weekly allowance would be more like 440. So yeah, that takes out a decent chunk. But 440 is still plenty to pay for food and whatever other shit you need. Remember, the 440 is after your rent, loans, and utilities (water, electricity, internet) have been paid. the only thing you need left is food. Plus I put the loan payment at 1k a month, so you would be out of debt in less than a year.

I'm currently designing a game on my own but want to get some connections while at college and hopefully make a career out of this (talking strictly indie). Meanwhile I'll be going for a SoftEng degree to fall back on if that doesn't work out for me.
However, I'll be spending ~80k for the two years I'll be spending there (I already have my associate's from a community college). Do you think it's worth it? Do you think I should just press on, working shitty jobs and trying to start this company on my own (right now I'm still in the self-teaching phase, trying to improve my programming and artistic abilities day by day)?

I know this is a risky industry, but I feel like if I have an 80k loan to pay off while trying to make games and support myself, I have even less of a chance of getting my foot in the door.
Alternatively, if I skip college and continue working on my own, and remain unsuccessful, I feel like I might be too old at that point to go for my Bachelor's. Not to mention, right now I have the advantage of living with my parents, but that's most definitely going to change pretty soon.

I honestly haven't even looked into it. There's really no hope for me.

I like doing it; if I can make a living off it, I'm going to keep doing it.

I don't have debt thanks to a well-off dad.
I work full time and make $60k a year before taxes. After taxes and retirement it's like $30,000 a year.

I am saving almost every penny-- about $400 a month is used to buy necessities.

In a few years I want to buy a home or a farm.
