What started the normie invasion? I realize 4chan has been slowly getting more popular, but I think there might have been a spike after Elliot Rodgers. It's also around that time people started being meaner/snarkier. I mean, we always ribbed each other, but there seems to be even less sympathy for our fellow losers these days.

Around 2014 was when it really happened.

That was the time when "memes" broke through fully into the normiesphere. Note that pre-2014 the classic green frog was mainly referred to as "sadfrog", and post-2014 it is referred to exclusively as Pepe because that is the name that the normies latched onto (Yes, I am aware it was the original name, but it wasn't the main name for many years until recently).

There is a noticeable difference between 4chan pre-2014 and post-2014. I remember in 2013 and earlier there was a lot more original humour here, more discussions of actual worth (even if they were still typically angry and venomous). There were plenty of normies, but the normies that came were fully clued up on the site, the boards they visited, and generally blended in a lot better.

After 2014, it changed completely. All the ultra-normies who genuinely thought the whole "dank meme" and "rare pepe" thing was funny came here in droves. They're not here to discuss anything - they're only here because they think 4chan is the "weird meme site" where they can shitpost 24/7 and feel slightly edgier than the Facebook/Twitter/Tumblr kids. And then you unfortunately have a segment of older pre-2014 users who have adopted the normie culture and partake in the unfunny shitposting because they think they're being "post-ironic", perhaps without realising that it makes them even less funny and even more retarded than the actual normies.

Our only hope is that in a couple of years the "meme craze" will either die down or complete its transition into something completely alien and different to the original 4chan memes. Then this site will become disassociated from shitty normie humour, and ultra-normies will have little reason to come here. That was what happened, in my opinion between about 2010 and 2013. Normies were aware of the old /b/ memes, but during that period of time things like frogs and feels were not known outside of 4chan.

Do you think the meme craze will ever die down, though?

4chan got on the news

Yeah, nobody uses the classics meme's anymore.
All i literally see on my feed on fb is the same repetitive meme over and over again.
usually about cancer, school shootings, or whatever else normie humour has included into their little subculture/clique.
I've only grown to hate memes now because of it.
Idk if it's just me growing out of it, or i've just lost taste with most of the population.
probably both though, but the first time I ever saw 4chan i clicked off because there was too much categories.
But now that i actually understand it all, it makes me feel more like myself.

Almost certainly. That's the way the normiesphere works. Everything is about trends, fads, cycles.

This is why you don't see anyone in their right mind using rage comics, the forever alone face, or "the game" any more. All that old 4chan shit died a death years ago.

Frogs/Pepe aren't even used that much in normieland now. They reached a peak a year ago. There'll come a time soon when that will look as outdated and irrelevant to them as pedobear. What they've started doing instead is creating really horrible forced memes. Like "dat boi" and "damn daniel". Things that are literally not funny whatsoever, but people think they are because they've been told that they should find it funny. There's only really so long that can last before it gets boring.

The word "meme" pretty much isn't even used in the correct context by normies anyway. You'll notice that a "meme" for normies is just a picture with text on it. For example, they'll put up a pic of Kim Kardashian on instagram with the caption "when your eyebrows are on fleek" or some shit, and that will be referred to as "a meme". So, the definition will change, and with that 4chan will reduce in popularity again unless something new and normie-friendly is produced here again.

Each time something major happens inregards to 4chan it causes an influx of new users. Habbo Raids would attract people, being featured on the Fox News, and in particular Chanology brought it a whole bunch of new people.

If you're only discussing the influx to /r9k/, I'd definitely chalk that up to the Oregon shooter - the minute the thread and the archive where linked on every news site it was over.

First off, you really expect to read all that shit? Second off, 4chan sucked pre-2014 as well. Third, normies haven't ruined this place, it's ppl like you who complain all the time.

The reason I came to /r9k/ was cuz I was tired of porn threads on /b/, and this place is a lot more relatable because all of you guys are lonely like me.

i heard /pol/ was attracting a lot of attention from outside, due to the trump support thing. i do not know whether they've got real media coverage or not yet, but that could be something. they definitely have some posts on internet
