I really wanna buy a Macbook Pro once the new 2016 upgraded one comes out (most probably next month) and I've the money to buy it (half of which I won at online betting).

But today, talking about it with my uncle, he said "[anon], these are whims, it costs too much. You can pratically do the same with any other computer".

At this point I am really down. I am CRAVING about buying it. I wanna try Apple products for the 1st time.

What should I do? Buy it or not?
If I'd buy it, I'll feel guilty about all the money and about what my relatives think but I really want it.

I know these are not 1st-world problems and I know you probably will say "get outta here, normalfag" or something like that, but I'm just asking for an advice.

Also, I'm 22 and I'm supposed not to be influenced and "commanded" by others anymore.

Did any of you had similar situations?
>>
Why would u buy the latest and greatest much less an apple computer. Uve never even experienced osx you could hate it
>>
yeah you're retarded, my budget laptop that cost a quarter of the price is just as good, except that one has a bit more RAM than mine but I never even hit 50% usage on mine so whatever
>>
Macbook pro was my first computer. Got my last one in 2011.

For starters, which one are you buying? They vary greatly in cost and specs.

The only reason I use mac is its what my dad buys, as he has always hated windows. I personally prefer the OS, but in general I suck with computers.
Bear in mind you can't easily switch stuff out of a mac, the computers aren't really designed for it and apple will void any warranty you have.
But if you don't intend to customize it then that doesn't matter.
At the end of thr day, its your money. Buy what you want, fuck your family.
>>
>buying a mac

Don't be retarded. Why the fuck do you "crave" owning a mac? It's just a fucking shitty computer. Don't tell me you've developed brand loyalty without ever having actually owned one.

You're old enough to make your own decisions, but that doesn't stop you from being smart about them.

It's about the premium quality of the materials with which it's manufactured (see the average yrs the users have it before buying another and compare it with a non-Apple notebook).

Also, I wanna experience the Mac OS.

Yeah, betting on REAL sport events online, not virtual events. So...
>>
do not buy a mac laptop. they are extremely overpriced and not worth the money. there is nothing special about them, it's just marketing bullshit, you can get a regular windows pc with better hardware for half the price of a typical macbook pro.
>>
what do you wanna do on a mac that you cannot do on any other computer?
>>
>>28864072
could be because they treat it better because it's an oh so special macbook that cost an arm and a leg, I mentioned that laptop I had but I have an old one that still works that's comparable to the macbooks from the year it was bought. The price of both my laptops couldn't cover one macbook pro.
>>
Since you don't have the money anyway this entire thread is moot.
>>
which laptop should i buy to take on a sub or boat?
mainly for playing games and watching movies, might buy a hard drive
>>
Mac fanboys are faggots but the haters are faggots too. The haters hate for muh sekret club reasons. I had a dirt cheap laptop which I used for 6 years. When it finally died, I bought a macbook pro. Have had the mbp for 3 years. It's a fantastic laptop. Paying a little more isn't a big deal if you're going to use the laptop for a long time.

It will still be a mac, so no.
But it will be cheaper.
I'd get an air over a pro because the difference in specs in negligible and the battery life is goat
>>
>>28864300
But the monitor is a lot different!

Anyway, maybe I'm gonna go for that.
Now that there'll be the imminent release of the new versions, it comes with some discount too.
>>
What do you wanna do on it, OP?

I've heard Macs are great for editing and stuff like that.
If it's just to browse the internet, check emails, etc. they're also pretty nice but kind of expensive for such basics functions.

If you're planning to play videogames though, forget about it. Windows has a monopoly on games, so you might as well get a PC.

I'd get one if I had the money. I dont play PC games and I think OSX is pretty nice (OSX is the Mac's operating system in case you dont know). The only thing keeping me from getting one is the steep price.
>>
>>28864298
This first article is some of the dumbest shit I have ever read.
There is encryption on the Mac that not even the best super computers which the millitary use would have any hope in cracking for atleast 5-10 thousand years literally.
>You can turn on encryption and currently it will be able to protect your data with XTS-AES 128 encryption, which is by far the safest you'll ever need.

Any computer can do this
That's why the S in AES stands for standard
>>
>>28863911
I've always been using apple products and I really like it. Good trackpads, OS looks nice, works good with all my programming stuff for university. I'd go for it if you have the money.

get a ipad if you just want to browse the internet/ email.

if you do get a mouse that has two buttons because macs don['t come with right click. you would have to have your hand on the keyboard for right click.
>>
>>28864450
I'm currently using the 2013 Macbook Air and it's still as fast as when I bought it. You're just going to use it for shitposting on /r9k/ or do you also do stuff for uni on it?
>>

Yes, the Air is pretty thin and light. Super portable.

If you got the money, I say go for it.. You really have nothing to lose since you dont play vidya anyways.
>>
>>28864458

So Linux?

If OSX doesnt respect your freedums, Windows will respect it even less.
>>
Or you could buy a basic laptop for like 200 and a gnarly desktop for the same price
>>
>>28864559
Except that OP will always have that "what if" feeling if he does that.
>>
I got my Macbook Pro in 2011, when I was in 10th grade. It was my first computer, and still is. I am typing this from that same Macbook five years later. While I've gone through one hard drive failure and just recently being told that I need to replace my battery, it's otherwise been a delight to use. However, as the years go on and the more I want to play games on a PC, the more I'm considering just saving up for a nice high-end desktop. While the Macbook has been great for convenience's sake and much less clunky than an average notebook, I just don't get that grand computer experience out of it. But for everything else it's like a dream. My whole university career has been on this laptop.

But, I was young when I got it. My parents paid for it. I couldn't ever imagine spending my own money on something so needlessly expensive. If it's coming out of your own pocket, buy a PC. You can get a pretty nice one for the same price.

You are not craving anything. Stop letting marketers control your vernacular.
You are curious, and because the general consumption cycle does not typically involve "find a person with one and ask to borrow/test it out, or ask to test drive one in-store, or rent one for a week to see if you actually like it," then you fail to see the other options, primarily because you are an idiot.
You can do MORE with that money in buying a Thinkpad P50 (with actually decent specs) than you can with anything else.
>>
i love my mac products. i will defend them. now op, an important thing to consider is, do you have an iphone? if so, then i would stay in the apple family and get other apple devices. lets face it, the OS apps are head and shoulders above android apps. i have a macbook pro, and i do like it. is it overpriced? yes. but still. i use it every single day, ive never had an issue with it, never have to worry about viruses, and it syncs easily with my ipad and iphone and makes me feel like a badass. oh, and when women see your apple products they get fucking wetter than niagra falls. if youre siting at starbucks with some shitty dell laptop, dont expect some hot girl to notice your existence. just sayin.
>>
You know something funny? The thermal paste that Apple puts into the system is actually only rated for 3 years. It degrades during that time, and is said to be almost useless by the 3 year mark.
You know what they replace it with when you go into the shop?
The same 3 year thermal paste. It is the only Apple-approved thermal paste, and it sucks. There is no logic behind it, and there is no reason for it to be that way. The paste itself sucks in the first place, on top of the fact that it only works for a short time.
People wonder why their Macbooks run so hot.

"I never have to worry about viruses."
Some of the most popular Pwn2Own competitions are won (as in "had the best and most devastating exploit) by those exploiting OS X and IOS devices. They are, bar-none, the least secure devices available, and they are devastatingly bad at default security.
The only reason why you would not "worry" about viruses is because someone (Apple) paid a very large sum of money (about $1 billion) on pushing that image to you.
Do your research. Since about 2008, OS X devices have been subject to regular netsec publications.

Because malware devs would rather target the majority of the population (Windows, ~90% OS share) than Macs (~9-10% OS share). Not because it's inherently more secure.
It's more like a "security through obscurity" kind of thing.
>>
>>28864848
Absolutely. Get any thermal paste and apply a conservative amount. Use iFixit.com for the guides on disassembly.
>>28864859
I should not have put a product name in there, but the P50 is actually a hellbeast of a machine in the same price range, so that is why I put it out there. To be perfectly honest with you, modern "performance" (the snappy feeling in computing) is a matter of buying a laptop with a decent screen (older thinkpads often have a 1920x1080 IPS option), decent processor (real-world performance has luckily not changed much in the past 5 years), and then a great amount of memory (16GB of DDR3 is about $50 these days) and a good SSD (240GB MLC drives are around $100).

I have never had someone upset with me when I have refurbished an older (2nd generation i7, usually) enterprise-level laptop and upgraded the RAM and HDD to what I mentioned above.
>>28864921
The modern popular entrypoint is the browser. Disable vulnerable plugins (java) and use an adblocker to avoid drive-by installations. From there, enable the goddamned firewall. Unless that was recently fixed, it is off by default.
>>28864917
Most viruses, like STDs, show little to no sign of infection. You are clearly downloading different torrents. Go ahead and try downloading a bunch of cracked software for OS X onto that Macbook.

You might as well get an ultra book with decent battery life.

I bought a 2015 Macbook pro 15 inch with highest specs recently. I'll give you my review (I normally use windows).

No fucking equivalent for MS paint. This makes it harder to make comics or edit images on a mac. I looked around the app store for an equivalent but all of them leave a fucking watermark on the image you export. Fucking retarded.

File navigation is harder. There's no "go up one folder" button when you're browsing for files. You have to hit command up-arrow-key, which is okay but if you're using one hand with the mouse it's a fucking pain in the ass. Also there's no button to press to show the desktop. You have to use two hands to press command+f11, which again is annoying if you're trying to do everything with a mouse (if you're lazy like me).

Resizing windows is a pain in the ass. If you hit the green button it goes fullscreen and hides everything else. You have to hit option+green button to fill up the screen while still showing the taskbar. Sometimes I accidentally move the window a few pixels to the side and try to make it go back with the maximize button because I'm ocd. It doesn't fucking move back if it's offset by a few pixels. Jesus Christ what happened to beautiful design that Apple is supposed to be known for?

The "taskbar" is objectively uglier than the one in windows. Things are all over the place and if you have a lot of things open it's a mess. It really is designed for people who don't want complications when using a computer. If you're tech savvy then there will be a lot of pain.

Pros: 9 hour battery life which makes me happy with my purchase, believe it or not. The trackpad is also probably the best one I've ever used. It's very smooth and feels natural. I bought a magic mouse too but the trackpad is actually better. Also it looks cooler. You can decorate the glowing apple in the back which makes it fashionable. Also when I hang out at coffee shops I feel cooler with a Mac.
>>
>>28864133
You will need to do your research on what you enjoy (in regard to dimensions, usually).
A new development in the process of getting a good laptop is realizing that well-built machines do not look like toys.
I really do recommend the second-series (*520, *420) of Thinkpads. Overall the most useful machines I have ever encountered. The HP EliteBook series and the Dell Precisions/Latitudes of the time are pretty decent, but I still think that the thinkpads of that range are superior.

All Thinkpads (most enterprise laptops) have spill-proof keyboards. Yes, you should buy an SSD to upgrade to.
>>28865190
"Basic shit" in 3 years will take more RAM, and as I just said, buying a used/refurbished thinkpad is the same cost AFTER UPGRADE as buying a modern laptop with a trash-tier CPU, abysmal amounts of RAM (4GB is useable, but not at all future-ready), and a 5400RPM hard drive.

In regard to all laptops, a newer-than-what-they-gave-you 9-cell battery is typically part of the upgrade process.
>>
>>28865369
>Trackpad
Find a laptop with a trackpoint on it. I promise it is fucking amazing to use a laptop with.
Feeling cooler because you are giving in to peer pressure is not actually being cooler, and your feelings are founded in naivety.

I didnt buy into apple meme until I got macbook air as a gift.

Wonderful machine, top notch quality. Im writing this on a late 2013 model running bootcamped win 7. Runs great. I even game some older titles with it. Nfsu2, trackmania nations...

The thing with apple is they spare no expense.
With budget laptops, even higher end laps, you can feel they saved money on keyboard, trackpad, audio, screen etc.

Apple makes everything A complete package that runs great.
Im not into mac os, its good but I wasnt into learning it, so I have dual boot and can still use it when I borrow my mac to senpai members. There is zero data there so no worries, privacy protected.

It should be a good investment anon, you might even get ur uncle on the apple bandwagon.
And everything apple holds good price over the years.

For my next lap idk if I'll go with apple again, since I think Ill be more interested into gaming so gaming lap will do better job with its dedicated cooling etc. Anyways macbook air is nowhere near deisgned to be used for gaming.

While I was at Uni, this lap also was very very great to use in public libraries studying presentations and browsing.

All around great lil thing.

To the user. They use shitty RAM with bad timings (and a firmware that goes apeshit if you try to put RAM with different timings into it), and they solder that to the board these days, making a simple RAM upgrade a matter of buying a $400 motherboard.
