It looks like one of these threads is overdue, so I'm making another one.
I am a guy who just really likes Silent Hill, especially 2 and 3. I study them, research them, and have a local archive of documents, images, everything I can find about the development, lore, symbolism, trivia, and so on about 2 (which is nearing completion in my eyes).
I make these threads on /r9k/ because it moves slower, and it's my home board. /v/ is fine but the threads get full of shitposting pretty quick, so I like to make the threads here.
If you want to learn anything about the lore, symbolism, trivia, development, whatever of the Silent Hill series, ask me! I'll do my best to answer. The first four games are incredibly deep and dense with symbolism and references, and I personally find them fascinating.

It was requested that I also make a let's play explaining everything as I go in SH2 because some anons found the information I was sharing interesting. I have done so, and you can find it here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QYb7qOgBVwY
IMPORTANT NOTE: I make nothing off of these videos, they are not monetized. A couple have ads because Konami detected their cutscenes and placed them on the videos for themselves, I can't do anything about this. However, I encourage you to use adblock on all of my videos to ensure Konami earns no money, as they do not deserve it anymore.

In my next post, I will post download links to all of the first 4 games, the first one for PS1 emulation, and the next three for PC. This includes all the widescreen/no cd/patches and fixes you will need. I will attach an image with the recommended emulator settings for SH1.

Anyways, come in, chat, relax, and have a good time, whether you're new to the series or a long time fan, let's get comfy and have a nice night together friends!

And in case someone's once again new to this PC gaming stuff: Use a program like PowerIso to mount the ISOs of 2 & 3, and then run their installers like always.
The SH1 is a PS1 rip that you gotta emulate.
The "sh2proxy" fix works as a no-cd crack as well, and is included in the pack.

In case you experience issues saving the game / not being able to edit the disp.ini, make sure the files aren't set to "Read Only", and run the game as Administrator.
If SH2 gets stuck in a black screen upon launch, close it and re-start it again.

here's the recommended emulator settings for SH1. Works great on all other games too.

The plugins used are:
-Pete's OpenGL 1.78; (more options & better performance than 2.x version)

Feel free to email me at [email protected] if you have any technical questions about the installs/games that you need sorted out, or even if you just need some direction as to where to go in the games.

What is your favorite Silent Hill game and why?

Cool, love the series and am really into survival horror. RE1/2 and SH2 were some of the first games I played in the 90's.

I love RE, too, but SH will always be my favorite. I have an extra soft spot for REmake and, although it's not really survival horror, RE4. SH2 will always be my favorite.

What are your thoughts about Fatal Frame 2? That was also really up there for me.

I've actually never played a Fatal Frame game unfortunately. I have a whole lot of old PS2 horror games that I've been meaning to get to, and the FF games are at the top of my list. Are there any I should avoid?
>>
>>28824017
I'd start with FF2, it's definitely dated and is in dire need of a remaster but if you like heavy ambient dread and eeriness then you'd probably like it.
>>
>>28824085
What did you think of some of the later entries after SH2?
I really liked 3 and 4. Not as much as 2, but definitely wasn't disappointed at all.

I love 2 and 3 the most, almost tied but I prefer 2. However, I have been playing SH1 a lot lately and after researching it extensively, I love it almost as much. 4 I like a bit less than the first 3, but I still think it's an excellent, excellent game. There are some odd design decisions when it comes to enemy sound effects (the patients belching, the odd grunt of the twin victim opposed to the cool monster noise it made in the prerelease trailers) but apparently it's because Yamaoka only did the music and did not direct sound effects, so some people put in odd choices that actually have no lore explanation at all. I also dislike the escort mission half of the game, because it's frustrating, but once you know what you're doing it's quite enjoyable.
>>
>>28823724
SH2 was the only good one, The first one had shitty PS1 graphics and everything after 2 wasn't even scary.

I enjoy Origins, I like Shattered Memories, but I despise Homecoming. Downpour is bad, but it's got some good ideas. Book of Memories is ass. Not just because it's a different genre- it's way harder than it need to be and very, very tedious.>>28824109
meant to add this, sorry.
>>28824178
>shitty PS1 graphics
>everything after 2 wasn't scary
1 is amazing, and 3 is almost as good, if not as good, as 2. Just because they're not as scary, you think they're shit?
>>
>>28824164
Agreed, I'd have to give SH3 and 4 props for having more unlockables, which make repeated playthroughs much more rewarding. I remember SH2 just not having many unlockable weapons, but I could be wrong.
But, in terms of the story/atmosphere itself, SH2 is second to none.
So, let me ask you this: what about The Last of Us? Does that float your boat?
>>
>>28823724
Nice, cool series.
I have a question, I've never really played silent hill 3 all the way through. COuld you explain all o the endings? Which is the real one?
>>
>>28824262
>>28823724
Oh, and I have to run to the bus stop soon, but it would be cool to keep talking with another survival horror fan, do you do skype chat or w/e?
>>
>>28823724
Sounds fucking awesome man!
One thing I'd be interested in is if SH had any cool hidden mechanics or features
Stuff like how the enemies in Shattered Memories changed appearance based on your choices
Or how the zombie enemies in SH2 would eventually stand back up if you let them crawl enough
Little intricacies like this have always interested me
>>
>>28824203
Why do you despise Homecoming?
>>
>>28824278
The 'normal' endings is the canon one afaik. I think they reference it in homecoming.
She just leaves the otherworld, finds Douglass, and calls herself cheryl again before leaving.
>>
So, in your last SH thread I asked whre should I start with the series. I recently finished SH2 and loved it. Although it took a moment to get used to dated graphics and weird controls, I loved it. Mostly because of the story (it's a metaphor which somehow manages to be both understandable, but subtle), and yeah, for most of the time I was scared shitless.

After I finished I decided to play 4 - I didn't want to play 1 because graphics seemed too dated, and 3 is a direct sequel to 1 so I decided to skip on that - and I feel really disappointed. The story is still pretty cool, not as cool as 2, but interesting to say the least. But not a single moment made me feel even remotely scared.

So far, I have to agree with >>28824178
>>
>>28824413
Yeah, 4 is by far the worst of the 'good' games.
Just deal with SH1's graphics, but I can tell you that you'll definitely like SH3. Its pretty much as good as 2. Less subtle and symbolic, but just as tense and atmospheric

Very true, SH3 is more openly replayable, but SH2 has a few interesting NG+ weapons. I agree with your assessment though.
>TLOU
I love it actually. I like that the gameplay is actually good, and it doesn't constantly interrupt you with unskippable cutscenes like Max Payne 3. I wouldn't really call it survival horror, although it has elements, but I love the story, I love the atmosphere and the interesting enemy designs, and I think it's a great game overall. Not a movie like most people say, Uncharted 4 is MUCH closer to being a movie than TLOU.
>>28824298
Email me at [email protected] and I will be sure to respond man! Nice talking to you, have a good day.
>>28824278
There are three endings. One is the joke UFO ending, so that of course is not really a real ending.
The other two endings are interesting. The good one is the default one, where Heather beats the God that was in her/took over Claudia, and therefore is pure and clean, able to leave Silent Hill with Douglas, who survives.
In the other ending, called Possessed Heather, apparently overtaken by demons, kills Douglas in cold blood, and then is likely to continue the cult's work, as foreshadowed by Claudia saying Heather will "lead the followers to Paradise with blood stained hands

In Homecoming it's mentioned that Douglas escaped SH and exposed the cult, and therefore the normal ending is considered canon.
>>28824300
Oh man, just watch my videos because the stuff you're talking about is very plentiful. The raw shocks in Shattered Memories are custom based on your behavior in the game- in all the previous SH games, all the enemies are based on the psyche of the protagonist and LITTERED with symbolism.

Hidden mechanics though, there are a few. If you turn off your flashlight and walk, you can sneak by enemies. If you equip the Great Knife, enemies will think you're Pyramid Head and actively run from you.
>>
>>28824452
I mean, is 4 even a SH game?
>no radio
>no flashlight
>no fucking Silent Hill
>>
>>28824478
Yeah, its kinda bullshit.
The best thing to come from it are some of the monster designs, but thats kind of it
>>
One thing I am kinda curious about - does the franchise have an official, canon timeline?
>>
>>28824516
No, but it doesn't need one either.

It shits all over all established SH lore, and it's based on a mistranslation for the most part.
If you want me to explain in detail, let me know, but that is the summary of it. Also the combat mechanics are literally broken, the graphics are all gray, there is no originality whatsoever, it's not scary and so on. The only good thing is that the enemy designs are decent.
>>28824413
4 is by far the worst of the good games, like the other guy said. It's still good compared to most Survival horror games, but it's not nearly as good. You will get used to SH1's graphics very quickly if you play it, as it controls and plays just like 2 and 3.
If you must skip it, just read up on the story before playing 3. 3 is almost as good if not as good as 2, and you will love it very much if you loved 2.
>>28824452
It actually has just as much symbolism, and the symbolism is just as subtle. It's just that the story is a little less isolated than 2, which is why most people don't like it as much. The characters aren't as interesting either, but they're still awesome.
>>
>>28824504
Nah, Twin Victim is the only one I find interesting and only because I finished 2 right before it so I know what does it refer too
>>
>>28824516
It seems like the developers intended all the games to go on a timeline, but considering all logic is thrown out the window after 4 (hell, arguably after 3), creating a timeline is almost pointless.

That said, yes, there is a vague sort of timeline. You can deduce who went to the town first and all that.
>>
>>28824558
Explain in detail. I already know a lot of the reasons but you are more knowledgable than me about this.

The biggest issue for me was pyramid head being a major part in the story for a character who isn't James. That triggered my autisms
>>
>>28824558
I cannot comprehend that you would pick downpour over homecoming. At least homecoming retained the general feeling of silent hill. Downpour is more of a generic hack'n'slash than a sh game.
>>
>>28824580
>>28824556
I got interested in that when I tried to figure out the time of events in 2 (that's a thing I do with most games and movies, figure the time of events based on details, if it's not specified) and realized I have no fucking idea when it is.

I have to disagree with you.
While it may lack the radio and flashlight, it has the atmosphere and story of an SH game. The music is great, the enemy designs are awesome, the story is awesome, the only shitty thing is the escort part of the game, and that it looks worse than 2 and 3.
Also, there is a common myth that is was not originally an SH game and was given the name just to boost sales- this is just plain false. It was an SH game from the start, although originally planned as a spin off, not 4, but still an SH game.
>>28824516
Not really. I could give you rough approximations as to when the games take place, but the years are questionable. I could go into very minute detail, but it would take a while. SH1 takes place between 1987 and 1995 (although Homecoming says it takes place in 1983, this is impossible based on the signs in the game) SH2 takes place in 1994 (most likely, based on a calendar in Born From A Wish), 3 takes place 17 years after SH1, and 4 takes place after SH2 at some point. SH Origins happens 7 years before SH1.
>>
>>28824558
I think Scarlets level was probably the best part of Homecoming

Also to the people who don't like SH1 that game has one of the best openings to a horror game imo and is worth playing for that alone
>>
>>28824626
What did you think of the first SH movie and wasn't the second SH movie just god awful?

There is a calendar in Born From A Wish which Maria looks at and says "it's from 10 years ago..." and it's dated 1984. Besides that, the only thing that dates the game is the VHS tape.
>>28824606
Downpour is a bad game with some good ideas. The story has a few interesting ideas, the sidequests are poorly executed but have good ideas, and the notes are decently written. Not good at all, but it's not an attack and destruction of the Silent Hill lore or canon. It's inoffensive to me whereas Homecoming it's amazingly awful. I will explain how it shits all over the lore now
>>28824605
>the canon ending of SH3 is that Douglas leaves and exposes the cult, which had barely any members/0 members left after the events of SH3, and therefore the entire cult/"The Order" plotline makes no sense
>The Order is mentioned in one memo in SH3, and was a mistranslation. It wasn't meant to be a proper noun. The cult is just a cult, it has no name, The Order is not actually existent in any Japanese versions of the games
>The area where Shepherd's Glen is in relation to Toluca Lake is exactly where Southvale (the area of SH shown in 2 and 3) is meant to be. It actively removes that portion of the map
>When you do get to Central Silent Hill, 90% of the shops and interesting places have been remove, it's been altered to have a prison, and the hospital's layout is completely different for no reason other than to be worse
>the combat system is so broken that your best weapon is the knife, the first weapon you get, because it attacks so fast you actually stunlock any enemy except for a couple bosses. Even the final boss can be killed with no damage taken using the knife
>the entire justification for the new combat system is that Alex is a soldier- except for the fact where you get to the end of the game and find out he is not a soldier
>the notes are written poorly
>>
>>28824710
Not him but they are good as long as you don't try to judge them by silent hill standards.

>Pyramid Head shows up once. Pyramid Head's design is custom for James. Lore wise there is no reason for him to be there. He only shows up twice if you get the "Boogeyman" ending, and it makes no sense lore wise because Pyramid Head is JAMES'S TORMENTOR, AND REPRESENTS JAMES
>in SH3, Valtiel is Heather's version of PH, hence their looking the same. If "Pyramid Head" was going to show up, he could have, but his design needs to be different to fit Alex
>a lot of the enemy designs (the smoker thing) are just uninspired and reaching in symbolism
Good thing the game wasn't much worse like it was planned to be. There was going to be a "DBZ style fight" over Toluca Lake, and Elle was meant to be a grown up Laura.

Also HUMAN ENEMIES are not particularly scary in a Silent Hill game.
>the Order exists despite the cult being disbanded
Plus there are a million little plotholes, and every sequence is linear despite the map trying to trick you otherwise.

Very true.
So anyways to the other guy who can't believe I picked Downpour over Homecoming- it's the lesser of two evils. Downpour is a bad game that pays homage to Silent Hill in a few ways. Homecoming is a bad game that does everything it can to actively ruin Silent Hill. It's inoffensive, indifferent badness vs offensive, aggressive terrible. I can be just as happy as to pretend Downpour does not exist. Homecoming does not grant me the same luxury.
>>
>>28824822
I used to have to take many breaks from SH3 as well. I find it scarier to SH2. The atmosphere is literally best described as "oppressive", well put.
>>28824827
Probably never. They'll release another cashgrab shitty one someday, though, don't worry.
>>
So you guys say I shouldn't be trying Homecoming after I finish 4?
>>
>>28824754
I think the notes aren't that bad (better than in Downpour) and the map changes can be justified with "everyone sees Silent Hill different" or "the dev team is full of idiots who can't make the world consistent". And the cult could have very well simply reformed - the timeline isn't specified and they even worship a slightly different variation of god. However there is no excuse for the combat system. But then combat is even worse in Downpour, because it's piss easy. And the M. Night Shayatbhfamalaman plot twist is as cheap as it gets.
>>
>>28824776
Regarding this and OP
I thought the first SH film was good, there are lots of nods to the games such as the camera angles referencing the first corridor bit in SH1 at one part and also the iconic STL siren
Plus even though I'd still consider the first film mediocre and not the best adaptation the film came from a place of passion and was made with the best intentions

The second film however is a shitty 3d gimmick cash grab with some hamfisted references to SH3

>>28824924
Theme of Laura > This

I like the title "Homecoming" after the game which didn't fucking take place in Silent Hill.
>>
So anyway, what should I play after I finish 4? Should I force myself to go through the dated graphics of 1, then play 3 and then what?
>>
>>28824899
Imo opinion Homecoming is alright if you want a SH fix and aren't a major fan like OP so you can ignore the game's glaring flaws however the best bit of the game is Scarlets section because it's the most SH part of the game and one of the best designed
Everything else in Homecoming got a bit tedious thinking back on it but it's an alright play
If you like SH play it at least up to Scarlets part around halfway through and if you're still enjoying it after that by all means have fun and finish the game
>>
>>28824899
Play it if you want to have a good laugh, or get angry, otherwise spend your time on something else.
>>28824901
Different strokes for different folks on the notes. Literally in Homecoming the clocks stop and the notes say "It's almost as if something isn't letting us move on". It's beyond heavy handed. The map changes can't be justified as everyone seeing it differently because we know SH is real and has a defined layout based on James and Mary's trip- Southvale is where it is, Lakeview Hotel is where it is in reality, and therefore an entire town being there makes no sense. I agree on the second part, they're idiot devs who didn't care.
The timeline is specified as taking place after 3, as they go out of there way to mention Douglas exposed the remnants of the cult, ending it for good, only to then show that it was never ended. The child sacrifice has been going on all the characters' lives, and therefore the cult didn't end at some point, the game goes out of it's way to put a plot hole in. Downpour at least isn't mechanically broken, it's awful and easy but it's not fundamentally broken.

No hostility towards you at all, I'm sorry if it sounds that way I enjoy talking to you, Homecoming just upsets me. I hope you can understand why I prefer Downpour.
>>28824921

Good taste, Room of Angel is my favorite theme, too.
>>28824948
It's obviously brand recognition, but the fact it's done so poorly with no respect is so dumb.
>>28824997
Force yourself through 1, if you can't take it after the school section, stop. Just read about it and play 3. There's no point forcing yourself if you're not enjoying it, and that's from OP an SH fanatic. After 3, if you want more, play Origins, or Shattered Memories. They're both decent, although SM is better if you've played 1.

I really enjoy the series myself as well, good that you're doing such a thing.

I'd like to ask about Pyramid head, not all that uncommon I am sure. If you skip the basics and all and go really deep about him, what could you come up with? Like, some in-depth analysis.
>>
>>28825039
Yeah, I get you now. When it comes to the cult thing I was rather implying that they might have been an unspecified time skip in which the cult resurfaced. And arguably the city is actively changing and/or falling apart, so there is a slight chance that it wasn't just down to their stupidity. I might be biased because I enjoyed the quite nicely reproduced atmosphere of the first games in it though.
>>
>>28825039
My favourite SH songs are
Promise Reprise
and the Shattered Memories theme

Shattered memories is a surprisingly fun SH in my opinion mainly due to the oh shit as the world freezes over then you get to charge about like a spastic retard in an ice rink
>>
>>28825039
I usually get used to dated graphics after half an hour, but SH1 looks REALLY dated. I'll try though, was it ever ported to PC?

Also, one more thing that interests me - after reading a bit about the lore it seems to me that the story in 2 is kinda separated from the rest. Since the rest of the series focuses on the cult and stuff (don't know much, because I tried to avoid all spoilers), do I still get psychological issues and symbolism?

Ooo that's a good question, but it will take a while to explain.
Pyramid Head at his basis is James's tormentor, and also a duality of James. The sexual frustration James feels guilt for having during Mary's illness manifests itself in Pyramid Head's molestation of mannequins and lying figures. Throughout the game, he carries the Great Knife. The Great Knife is so heavy and painful to move, that it slows James and PH down a great amount. This knife represents the heavy burden James is carrying around, both in having an ill wife, and in the guilt for having killed her. PH eventually switches to the spear only for function, as he needs to run to catch you and Maria. Late in the game, there are two Pyramid Heads. This is because each one represents a person James has taken the life of - there is originally one, but after killing Eddie, there are two.
After the boss fight, they both take their own lives, emblematic of the fact that James harbors many suicidal thoughts. This is also seen in the fact that, after James read's the diary on top of the hospital showing suicidal ideation, PH shows up to knock him off the hospital, symbolizing his suicide. This is also why, after beating him for the first time, he walks down the stairs and submerges himself in water- In Water being the ending where James submerges his car along with Mary's body in water and takes his own life. It's strongly hinted this is the canon ending.
There's a few more facts about him, but those are some of the big ones. He is also James's manifestation of the cult helper demon Valtiel, who shows up differently for each troubled psyche in Silent Hill

Oh I see, yeah that makes sense I suppose, it's just an odd way for them to do it. That would make sense except the town of Shepherd's Glen has been there for many generations, so Southvale falling away would have had to occurred hundreds of years ago for that to make sense. It's good you can enjoy it though.

Mine too actually, very good taste. I love White Noiz as well. I agree, I think SM is an awesome reimagining of 1, and I enjoy it a lot.
>>28825215
Never ported to PC unfortunately. If you play on PC (emulate it) it will look upscaled/higher res/wide screen and overall much better, even if your computer is a piece of shit, so that might help.
True that 2 is separated a bit from the rest, but the others are just as psychological. Every games' enemies are based entirely on the psyche of the protagonist (not necessarily the player character, but what I would consider the protagonist). Especially 3 is rife with psychology, and you actually get to see what the town and monsters reflect in a grown female psyche which is interesting, which is why you'll love it.

Don't worry, the symbolism is just as plentiful in 1 and 3. If you can't stand 1, I'm doing a lore-play right now where I explain every detail and symbolism/development fact as I go as well, which would help a lot before playing SH3 if you'd rather watch that to get all the details instead of reading extensively. No pressure though, it's just I kind of make them for people like you who'd rather not struggle through the game by themself and then read extensively after to get the symbolism.

I just posted episode 2 of my lore-play of Silent Hill 1 today, so once that's finished I will be playing 3 as it's a direct sequel to 1. After that, I'm going to play Homecoming for fun, to make fun of it and point out how ass it is along the way.
>>28825420
Very, very hard to say. In SH3, Vincent says "they look like monsters to you?" to Heather, which worries her, but he then says he's joking, however he seems very serious. A lot of people think this is where the idea of SH citizens being morphed into monsters started- however, it actually started in SH2, as 1. the dead man's notes say "I saw the demons, although my friend says they're not" and 2. the corpse with the apartment gate key has the head of a lying figure- implying he was a person who was morphing into a lying figure.
However, it's unclear, and there's only some slight implications- most think the real town is just on another plane, where everything is normal and crazy shit is not happening, and the player character has just been transported to the fog world version of SH once entering the town.
>>
>>28823724
Hey OP, this question isn't about SH, so feel free to disregard.

I'm curious, though - what do you do for a living? I'm someone with a passion of his own, but I've lived most of my life in NEETdom, and my passion has become something of an obsession. I've always wanted to see an SH game that takes place during the 70s, separate from the cult stuff, where a very troubled soldier from Vietnam wanders into SH and sees terrible things, as he did terrible things during the war. Once he leaves he decides to get clean and get his life together.
Kind of cliche but we haven't seen a REAL soldier in SH yet.
However, my favorite idea of all is that I want a pedophile to enter SH, and be tormented for his wants and desires. Depending on how you play the game, you find out if he has stopped himself from acting on his desires, or if you act really sleazy, you find out he has molested others in the past. Of course most pedophiles were molested themselves, so a lot of the monsters would be based on the horrors of his own molestation. I want to see a somewhat less sympathetic character experience SH, but not one that's entirely irredeemable.

That said it's way to taboo to ever get made.
>>
By the way OP, have you heard of the indie game Lone Survivor? It's heavily inspired by SH, and it's actually what got me interested in the series, I thought you might want to check it out

However right now, I'm a NEET as my semester has ended. Which is why my videos started being made a couple weeks ago, I have all this free time so it was time to ramp up the archive into a full on lore-play.

Vaguely, but I've had this idea since I played Downpour. If it sounds like I'm ripping you off I'm sorry, I don't remember exactly what you said. Murphy being the pedophile?
>>
>>28825534
Your hypothesis on the fog is how it works in the SH film where SH is a normal abandoned town however people can end up in the haunted fog fucked up version

Probably the most telling factor of what happens to normies in SH is the little girl in the hotel in SH2 as you meant her in the hotel but later hear her scream and its assumed that she perished by monster

Therefore considering all canon a logical conclusion would be that SH is a normal abandoned town however there is a hell version people can end up in where everyone is affected by the denizens

for example Cybil Bennet helps you fight a pterodactyl in 1, the girl in the hotel in 2 and also a bunch of people are offed in the fog world of Homecoming

However when the world is burned over it an be assumed that the characters are in there own personal hell world as no other people are usually present and new more warped monsters appear, an example would be how in Homecoming none of the soldiers of the order are present in the hell variant of SH

My passion is writing, and SH2 has been a HUGE inspiration for quite some time. For a lot my life I've been isolated and depressed, and at times I'd escape my anxieties by forcing myself to sleep through the day, drifting in and out of dream states and becoming generally disoriented.

I regret having wasted so much of my life, but at the same time, the loneliness and the vivid memories of dreams that seemed more real than reality have made me identify with this game in a unique way.

Ohhh right, I remember. That's true, and I didn't know that before you told me. But yes, I love that idea, and I think it'd make for a terrifying and disturbing game.
>>28825740
Actually she doesn't perish from a monster. In most endings it's assume she wandered away from the town by herself, but in the Leave ending you actually take Laura home and adopt her.
True though, the Otherworld is representative of a specific character's psyche. However just another reason that Homecoming makes no sense- the blood and rust Otherworld is based on Alessa's psyche, and being she's not around anymore, it doesn't make sense for the Otherworld to be that.
But it's just trying to mimic the movie.
>>28825815
I know what you mean, the game is very dream like, another reason I love it.
If I were you, I'd write, and write a lot. I spend almost all my time on SH stuff, and it's made me pretty knowledgeable about it. If you were to spend much time writing, well, it's like anything else- practice makes perfect. Short stories, poetry, novels, you just need to write and force yourself to do it- it's work more than immediate inspiration, and you need to work to hammer something out- remember your prose doesn't need to be good, each sentence and paragraph doesn't need to be perfect, you just need to finish a rough draft, then you can go back and change the details. I hope it works out for you. Maybe write articles for websites? Lots of websites will offer $100 per article, which you could use to make money in the mean time while you write your fiction and passionate pieces on the side, developing them until you can pitch to publishers.

I heard this idea a long time ago on other sites and somewhere around this year on /v/ that would never get a pass but it would be a marvelous idea if done absolutely right.

A Silent Hill game where the main character is a former Nazi. I see potential in that. But it's such a touchy subject.
>>
>>28825896
3 was the highlight for the Order and there whole create a God thing just seemed to result in another big semi mobile monster

It seems all the events surrounding the order are kept within the confines of SH which ultimately fits with the theory that the town is a purgatory the residents are trapped in
>>
There is something that I don't have a clear answer on with Silent Hill, the town itself. Is it abandoned or actually populated?

Like many things, it's hard to say. It's sort of implied vaguely in SH3 that God could effect the world negatively, but it's generally thought the magic only really stays in and around Silent Hill, and doesn't effect the entire world really. Also God being so weak and ill in SH3 makes it hard to believe she could actually hurt most anything on a large scale.

Not to be an autist but you should say the cult, not the Order, the Order is an mistranslation that Homecoming falsely ran with
But otherwise you're right.
>>28826001
Hard to say. We know SH is populated and real in some plane because Mary and James visited it for their vacation. Whether it's abandoned after that is not known, but most people think it's just a normal, populated and operating town, and when a troubled psyche enters they get transported to the fogworld version of SH where it is abandoned and terrible.
>>
>>28825946
Isn't Homecomings blood and rust Otherworld based off your psyche from the guilt of killing your brother

Which is possibly why other features like Scarlets doll can be found in the Otherworld is because it's based off the parents guilt of killing their kids

Which is the reason why all the adults are part of the Otherworld is because they all formed the pact to kill the children

Not really, because blood and rust has nothing to do with killing Josh.

The developers got the job because they mimicked the transition effect from the movie, and the movie was blood and rust so they mimicked that too.
If it was based on killing Josh, there would be a heavier water aesthetic instead, since he drowned because of Alex.
But yes the rest is true, the bosses and enemies represent the parents' different guilts and how the children were sacrificed.
>>
>>28826077
Kudos thanks for the tip

I've just gotten used to them being The Order since 2 was the SH I played the most and I never played 3 and they were always called the order in the film and Homecoming

Perhaps the order is actually some neo-cult based off the cult since their principles and the principles off the cult appear to be different
>>
Hey SHbro, enjoying your SH1, loved SH2. A few random things I wanted to tell you next time you made a thread.
>a lot of theories suggest that waterlogged areas/themes of SH2 mean that James' guilt is weighing heavy on him, but I don't think that's true.
>I don't think SH wants him to face facts, I think the town wanted him kill himself, via Toluca lake. The water damage in the otherworld, the suffocation based attacks, two noose references and in the end, James says In Water, that he understands what he had to do
> related to that, when james has to jump through his own grave, Eddie and Angela's graves are shallow, but James takes him to hell. I think it was a creative way to say that his crime is especially heinous and he will not be forgiven.
random questions
> why didn't you hit maria with the great knife in the end
> did eddie even really kill anyone or was he delusional and talking shit when you think about it
> if you're still editing the school level, will you consider using the Stomp em in da nutz music from boondocks when you step on a grey child?

I actually agree completely with that first part. I think the water damaged areas represent two things-
1. Suffocation and what James did to Mary and
2. the need for suffocation (the "too much water" theme of course foreshadowing the In Water ending)
But I agree completely, I think the Leave ending occurs because James realizes what Mary wanted and forgives himself, and therefore leaves, but I think what the town actually wants is for him to take his own life hence the heavy, heavy suicidal themes.
Also, the grave isn't the only idea of him jumping down to hell. He jumps through 5 or 6 bottomless holes just to get there, remember? All jumping down to hell, but good analysis my friend.
I didn't hit Maria with the great knife because I was used to the speedrunning strat which is to quick switch to the pistol and shoot her, it doesn't make anything happen differently though.
Ito says Eddie killed nobody ever. However, the room where you first fight him before the meat locker is riddled with bodies and he has a gun and they all have bullet holes in them. I believe that room is where he snapped and started killing people, before that I don't think he killed anyone, only the dog and shot the football player in the leg. He is a big talker, though, so it's possible he didn't kill any of those people in that room, though.
I'm still editing the Otherworld school so I'll see if I can add that for you m8, sounds funny kek.

Thanks very much for watching by the way.

The first SH movie is really a fun beast IMO, because it was made by an autistic fanboy director.

Christophe Gans literally begged Konami for the movie rights because he was a crazy huge SH1-3 fan. Then he wrote the movie script with the SH2 soundtrack looping in the background, which he said is one of his favorite soundtracks.

The movie isn't perfect, but you can really feel his obsessed fanboyism throughout the whole thing, and it's really interesting in that regard. I could relate to that at least.

Again with the kind words pham. Thank you.
I work hard to make it not shitty so I'm glad you enjoy.

Here's James's concept model. As you guys can tell, he was very heavily influenced by Harry. He's basically just Harry again. However I think his final face/model looks a lot like Bill Pullman from Spaceballs.

By the way, Harry's corpse model in SH3 is just James's model with a different face

To motivate Heather to get her revenge. That's really it. I don't mind it that much, because Harry is pretty plain as a character but Heather is much interesting. He serves better as sort of a background/motivator than an actual character. It's still a shame though because I liked Harry. He's a real nigga.

If anyone was in my previous threads, I said this picture is very rare and it is. Reverse image searching it brings up only the wiki I got it from, and a few random tumblr posts. However I did manage to find where it is in the game- it's a framed photo next to Mary's bed in the final cutscene, but it's behind a lamp so you have to go in the game's texture files to see the whole thing.

I think a lot of people were when it first came out, and I get that. I actually played 3 before 1 so I wasn't as effected by it.
After playing 1 multiple times and seeing how cool he is, although somewhat plain, it upsets me a bit but I still think it's a worthwhile sacrifice as it lends a lot to Heather's story.

Thanks anon, I've seen a few people say stuff like that. Maybe it's the raw autistic passion I have for such a narrow topic, at least that's what other anons told me. I guess it makes sense to me. It was really frustrating before being unable to express my passion, but now I can share it with others and it's turned out well. I'm glad they make you happy though, they make me happy too. I like to get comfy and talk about Silent Hill with my buddies.

Does anyone have any lore/trivia/whatever questions? I like to answer questions if anyone has them.

I can't stop laughing everytime you get puked on. I'm on ep 4 right now. Can you tell me about pyramid head. He is so fascinating.
>>
>>28827822
yeah he's so generic and generically heroic, but that always endeared me to him, because SH as a series has so many shady characters

even the main characters seem to go through silent hill and see horrible shit that would mind break anyone right? but they go through it for different reasons. his reasons were just pure and heroic reasons so I always thought that was cool

also SH1 scares me the most, and i just gotta instantly respect anyone who makes it out of that alive. i wonder if he had psychological problems later on in his life. or probably not, maybe he just chilled, enjoyed his family, and watched tv until the end. what a cool dude.

Yeah I did a bad job, I'm used to running by all of the lying figures so trying to confront them is tough. Do you want spoilers, or no spoilers? It's hard to describe without spoiling anything, but if you do want to know a bit about him see: >>28825253
WARNING: FULL OF SPOILERS

Otherwise, all I can tell you right now really is that he is both James's tormentor, but also a duality of James, he represents him in a lot of ways. His design is very strong and masculine, he is sexually aggressive, he is in constant pain, he represents James in those ways (more than aggressive James is sexually frustrated though).

Here is an early drawing Ito (monster designer) did in art school, which he reused as inspiration for Pyramid Head.

That's a very good point, and that puts into words why I've gained so much affection for him. He's a bit generic, but in a way he's unique- he's the only big hero in SH lore really. I mean other characters could be argued as it, but he's such a pure hero, it's awesome.

I don't think he struggled psychologically. It's said in SH3 he became very religious and just hung out writing horror novels, reading books, and watching TV in his comfy apartment while raising Heather as his own child. "What a cool dude" is a great way to put it.

I first played SH2 when I was 9, I read all about it and asked my dad to get it for my birthday. I got it and played the hell out of it, then researched it as much as I could. Even then I was forced to piece a lot of lore together for myself because the wiki wasn't as detailed or as big as it is now, and a lot of fansites didn't have much in the way of lore/trivia. SH2 was my first SH game. After that I played Origins, then 3, then 1, then 3 again, then 4, then Homecoming, then Downpour, and finally Shattered Memories.

I like it so much because it's all about psychology, it's all about symbolism, it's subtle and detail oriented and just wonderful overall. The music, the writing, the characters, the exploration, the puzzles, the lore, everything is perfect in my eyes. I like a lot of horror games, always been interested in scary games, but horror movies never drew my attention. They just can't scare me like video games do.

18 turning 19 in a few days. I used to be very liberal but I was in debate in high school, and I slowly began the realize the Negative side (generally the conservative side) was based more on facts and evidence than the affirmative side generally.

I've always been old fashioned when it comes to values though. Call it an innate disgust for people who sleep around. It's a pro for me. It would effect me worse if I had many friends in my fairly liberal university, but I have zero so it's not a big impact on that.

Maine I believe, because the idea is New England small town, because of the Stephen King inspiration.
Also the address for the Heaven's Night club is in Maine, and in the Book of Lost Memories, the town timeline says "Maine becomes a state" meaning it's most likely Maine.

You can either:
Start with 1, then play 2 or 3
or
Start with 2, then play 1, then 3
2 is standalone, same as 4 (although you should play 4 after all of them to pick up on all the references), so you can play 2 first if you really want. But I would recommend 1-3-2-4.

1 is the most dated so it might be nice to get that out of the way first, too.

I always liked Heather's resting expression, it was always mildly uncomfortable, but it was hard to say why. Having gotten older, I have that expression a lot these days; its just a feeling of having gone through a lot while waiting for it to end. She's seen a lot, but still hopeful like a little kid. Looking on it, it was probably really stressful on her moving so much with Harry and worrying after him. She couldn't possibly have friends or any trusted confidante.

>>
>>28831316
The early 00's handled female characters in media better than I remember. People complained about PC culture, but I'd say that thr girl power stuff then was probably way less hamfisted. I think Outlast should try their hand at having a female protagonist who goes through complete horror without getting bailed out. Heather had the be the only female protag in a big name horror game in the past that was subjected to weird bullshit with it being too light or full of aesops.

Exactly. I'm not even a diversity/SJW type at all, but they handled it so well in the 00s I had no problem with it. I would love to see Outlast try their hand at a female protagonist, just because it'd be interesting to see if they could write it without her losing her femininity.
