It's less that normies have gone out of their way to get into it and more that it forms part of this overallpanoply of "alternative" or "geeky" set of interests that one has to status signal about, including cute anime girls, DC/Marvel, certain video games - and so on - it helps that anime tropes mix well with 2010s irony too "LOL I WANT SEMPAI TO NOTICE ME XDDDDD" etc.

Novels. Normies can't even read a basic fantasy series like ASoIaF, their attention span really is that bad, having been dulled by TV for so long.
Normies like entry level tier anime and watch stuff thats airing then forget about it.
Feels like anime has been declining in popularity in the West. There are of course the popular series like SnK, Sword art, and KLK that normies watch but they don't really follow anime season to season.
Fujoshis are a problem, but they are mainly in Japan and aren't normalfags.

Maybe it's nostalgia but no series captured me in the same way NGE, Death Note, Bebop, first season of Mushishi and the other entry level stuff did when I first started watching it, and I've watched a good 300 or so series over the years.
The weird thing is with anime is that it feels like everything has been done, if that makes any sense. Look at a show like Psycho Pass, it has all of these ideas, often really good ideas derivative of sci-fi in general meshing about together but it never manages to pull them together into a coherent whole. It feels disjointed. Writing has always been the problem with anime. Writing and pacing.
I'll read the odd manga now and again, simply because I like how broad the genre is in Japan. I like historical fiction in general so stuff like Ad Astra and Historie is awesome for me.
