Photoshop CS2 is free, so you could try that out. It's been awhile since I used Gimp; it can do a lot of the same stuff, but most of my experience is in PS so I'm more comfortable with it.
Blending takes a lot of practice, the easiest way to skip a lot of it is to try and just pic refs that match up as closely as possible with the image you're trying to edit, particularly skin tones.
I've got a whole folder of different types of refs for different edits just in case I come up with a weird one. Though to be fair, 95% of the images people give you will be low quality or have weird filters on them or something, and that throws it off.
I don't know if this'll help or not, but the video I bring up to help me every once in awhile is called "Basic Cumshop Tutorial in Photoshop CS".
