For a while calling people "Reddit" was just a joke of sorts, like the boogeyman. There were some of them here, but not so many that there was any need to do anything about it. Howevet, in recent times, it had become strikingly clear how many of them are here, shitting up virtually every board with their idiotic opinions, hivemind mentality ("hype" for shit that we don't care about), and just general newfaggotry that ruins inside jokes and just generally makes it abnoxious to have to see them post. They add nothing of value here, only shitpost with unfunny jokes and retarded shit. And, worst of all, they're EVERYWHERE. On /int/ alone, every time Reddit is mentioned a swarm of unironic Redditors defend it, saying there's no difference between Reddit and 4chan. It kills me to see this after being here for 11 years, and we're just letting it happen.

What should we do to deal with this? One step would be to do what WizChan does and automatically permaban everyone coming to their site from a link on Reddit. This wouldn't end the problem, but it would certainly help. Of course, mods should also pay close attention to posts about Reddit, deleting threads about Reddit where they don't belong (i.e. outside of /b/ or a relevant context like this thread), as well as banning users who admit to being Redditors.

Thoughts? I'd like to send this to Hiro via Feedback, but I'd like us to reach a consensus first.

The site founder and most of the mods are longtime redditors, like for a decade or more. Good luck with your witchhunt.

That said, I understand that reddit hate still runs deep on /qa, but personally I'd worry more about non-redditor twitter and facebook crossposters who want to come to the site they think "that cute frog meme" they always see came from.
>>
>tell them to return to that website all the time
>make entire memes centered around mocking Rddit
>porn dumps, furry dumps, pony dumps, gore dumps, whatever dumps in response to the Reddt menace
>referring to whatever media as literally Red dit and trying to run it off the board
>all those threads shitposted into death
>etc.
>all of this for at least the past five years
>their hordes have only become more powerful, more influential
How much effort will it take to get rid of them? Nothing so far has worked.

>non-redditor twitter and facebook crossposters who want to come to the site they think "that cute frog meme" they always see came from.
I just don't know. It seems like something has really changed on this website in the past few years and that something is that more and more of the memes nowadays are from other websites. Drake is a notable example, and this specific incarnation was something a few months old by the time it got popular on /v/. I really don't get how Twitter memes got so damn popular on 4chan, especially given that it's mostly from "black Twitter" of all things.
>>
Wow look at all the sad virgins. Posted from my phone by the way. Looks like you fags should just fuck off to some loserchan.
>>
>>457055
People are being ironic and trying to ruse eachother. It's now probably deep rooted in the site self and not only just from the sort of people that visit it, but also from the cycle of 4chan memes.

meme gets created on 4chan -> eventually people outside start using it -> it gets popular -> 4chan resents the meme and stops posting it -> only people from outside and shitposters use it now -> it gets even less popular -> eventually dies

Now shitposters are just posting outside memes for the same effect that posting popular 4chan memes would.
>>
>>457025
Do you know why twitter niggers and facebook Chads know about pepe? Because reddit stole it. Because they've spread it all over the internet, just like every other recent joke/meme we created.

Reddit bridges the gap between 4chan and the surface dwellers like Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram. In the past, we could make our inside jokes and say stupid shit any the general public would let us do it because they couldn't figure out how to work the website/what our lingo meant. Now that Reddit has garnered so much popularity and 4chan is the new "hip" thing, they can effectively take our inside jokes and memes and spread them to pretty much anybody by repackaging them in a way that the kids can relate to.
All the while, the process brings more and more of them and their allies over here to try and be popular since, like I said, we're the new hip fad.
I much preferred Gaiafags desu, at least we all had a good laugh at their expense

>>
>>457094
>Now shitposters are just posting outside memes for the same effect that posting popular 4chan memes would
Are you referring to them posting already-stolen memes as a way of garnering replies (third to last stage on your flowchart), or are you saying that stealing Twitter memes is their attempt at "killing" them in the same way they kill our memes by stealing them? If it's the latter, I'd have to disagree: I don't think anyone here thinks 4chan's use of a meme would discourage "normies" (for lack of a better word) from using it.
>>
>>457157
I think they're just using these outside memes to ruse people. Posting cancerous memes on 4chan won't get the killed, it'd just make the site shittier. Getting (you)'s comes as icing on the cake.

For people from reddit, 4chan is this meme-filled place where shitposting and memespouting is fun and encouraged.
We just need some competent mods doing their fucking job and deleting those low-quality posts, which will hopefully discourage them from posting.

Trying to single them out will probably be a lot harder, but permabanning/publicly banning those who come from a reddit link or shamelessly posting a reddit link (which I've seen happen on /v/ a lot) is a good first step.
>>
>>457049
>porn dumps, furry dumps, pony dumps, gore dumps, whatever dumps in response to the Reddt menace
It's funny how some people actually think posting things that are weird will make people go away. And posting porn won't make anyone turn away. Porn is a retard magnet. The website is pure shock value to so many people, so posting that stuff only makes 4chan more interesting to them, while ruining it for many people that actually do want to be here and discuss things. They come here for the wacky, stupid stuff so they can laugh at it and show their friends.

Do you guys want to know the secret to removing Reddit/tumblr/whoever? Don't post over-the-top reactions to things you like or don't like, stop trying to make pointlessly offensive jokes and remarks at every opportunity. Report what needs to be reported. How do you make stupid people and kids leave? You lose their interest. You become boring. Until then, you might as well be from one of those other websites yourself.
>>

gore/disgusting content makes people leave.

If you wanted an imageboard without users there are countless choices for you to choose from.
>>
Almost nobody here speaks like reddit (except very few boards like /mu/, but they aren't even the ones where redditposting is most rampant). It's not used like it, people writing things in normal speech about things absolutely unrelated with either site are getting told to go back to riddit, often not because of the post's content, but because the one telling them makes an assumption about the poster's opinion on yet another things. I am all for telling "gb2rdt" to people really behaving and speaking like redditors, but it's very rarely used this way.

And as for defending reddit, yes, it grew lately, but this doesn't seem to be linked with actual redditors. I like doing it too, because it's one of the best ways to get lots of delicious butthurt when you aren't creative enough to write your own, original bait.
>>

I think posting pro-feminism and pro-SJW arguments would be even more effective, since the kiddies from Reddit can't stand the idea of either.

The demogrphics of people who browse 4chan and people who browse Reddit are complementary.

I mean come on, is it really that surprising that, since Reddit and 4chan appeal to teenagers and 20-somethings, that people would simply flow between one and the other based on how each site catered to specific aspects of their world view?

There are probably plenty of wretches who "lurk" r/gaming and post on /v/ because they care for posting in the upvote system.

Reddit is a better content-delivery system than 4chan, but the "banter" is of a much more controlled and general nature. 4chan is more interesting for individual discussion, but unless you make generals (which I don't care for), content delivery en masse is rarely achieved.

You know what? Call me a crossposter, a faggot, and cancer. I browse what appeals to me and I post where I feel I can say something of value. You, as a purist, have no real control on how I browse the Internet, and if both 4chan and Reddit are acceptable to my interests, the only way you will make me stop browsing 4chan is if 4chan is:
>Filled with spam
>Devoid of any originality
>Remove Anonymity

Better get cracking on that. Unless, you know, you actually like those features.

And I don't browse the main subreddits, or even anything particularly political. I choose what personally pleases me, and, somehow, I don't get eternally vexed the fact that people who use the same site post content with which I do not agree or enjoy. Same on 4chan: let there be Fascists, Libertarians, and SJWs on the same board, It keeps things from becoming a circlejerk.
>>
>>457018
This might blow your mind, but have you considered that using more than one website might not be a bad thing?

Maybe it's 4channers invading reddit and not the other way around. People on reddit tell cancerous edgemasters to go back to 4chan, you know.

Hell, I came to 4chan from fucking highschool kids telling me about it back in 2006. Do you honestly think that adults coming from reddit are more cancerous than I was back then when I was 16 years old?

I mean, for many that answer might honestly be yes.

The people who complain about redditors seem to have a thing against all sources of potential moderation, whether it be politics, internet administrators, ideology, or simply the demographics associated. If you're not the ideal, you might as well die, and preferably in a painful way for their entertainment and schadenfreude.

He's right.
The Redditors here tend to be edgy teenagers who come to shit everything up with naughty words like "nigger" and "kike". Prime example: during the SC primary on /pol/, the thread was flooded with unironic Redditors posting screencaps from political subreddits. Case in point: they don't understand hyperbole/jokes and actually get super buttmad about SJWs rather than just making fun of them. Pretending to agree with SJW shit would make them all say "yeah guys 4chan went to shit, it's not like it used to be when I first came onto it three weeks ago, I'm leaving".
It's one possibility.

And now you're defending Reddit? Either you're making shit up or you were never a serious poster here. I've posted religiously since early 2005, never have I had any genuine desire to use Reddit even when I tried to give it a chance. Anyone in the mindset of 04-07 4chan should just naturally know why Reddit is frowned upon here.
> Do you honestly think that adults coming from reddit are more cancerous than I was back then when I was 16 years old?
Hey, I started posting when I was 15 and was pretty non-cancerous by the time I was 16. I think being new is one of the biggest reasons why being underage is frowned upon: a 17-year-old who's lurked for 3 years is far superior to a 30-year-old who just got here from Reddit.

Even assuming it is really moot, I can believe it because the mods tend to be a higher concentration of Redditors. Their job is to control the userbase, censor shitposts and clean everything up. I have no problem with that: they're keeping things in check. But when a huge chunk of your userbase is like that, it just kills the community. Surely you can see what I mean.

No it wouldn't. I don't think you understand what makes something Reddit or not.
Besides, even if an autist would call it "Reddit", that doesn't make it Reddit. Old 4chan shit was nothing like the shit on 4chan nowadays, not only in terms of content but also in terms of theme and presentation.
>>

>>

Wrong again: Reddit likes anything that makes them seem separate from the norm. The whole "so random xD" and "so nerdy xD" culture thrives in Reddit. Their humor is either edgy shit or pseudo-intellectual bullshit like somthing straight out of The Big Bang Theory.
To give you an example, a friend of mine is a complete Redditor, and when he gets around his other Reddit friend this becomes painfully obvious. Anyway, he told this guy a joke that was something to the effect of "what's the difference between a school and a terrorist weapons storage? I don't know, I just fly the drone. Haha, I saw that one on r/funny". Seems to be a completely different type of humor from EFG and lolcats.

>>
>>457955
It's true.

https://www.reddit.com/r/shitredditsays this is the place where you bitch about reddit being a shithole full of non-PC jerks who make you oh so triggered. 70,000 users. 200 online right now.

https://www.reddit.com/r/imgoingtohellforthis Here is the place where you post deliberately offensive stuff. 500,000,000 users, 2,000,000 online right now.

70,000 is a smaller number than 500,000,000.

https://reddit.com/r/spacedicks before it was quarantined had over 800,000 users. It's no longer possible to tell how many users it has, but it's definitely more than srs.

Remember this the next time you accuse somebody of being from Reddit. You might be the one who is acting like a redditor, not them.
>>
>>458235
Except, that is wrong. That stuff might be considered reddit these days because they are mostly the only tards who use it and abuse it. However, if that stuff was created today, it wouldn't be 'reddit'. There is big difference between fucking reddit and 4chan. The presentation, execution, style, theme, reposting, abuse, posting style and other shit are important. If it was done the exact same, it would still be considered 4chan.

You are apart of the problem if you just go 'haha le meme haha le radum XD is so le reddit'. There was more to old 4chan than just 'so le radum XD'. That was an outsiders perspective and that's probably why reddit loves that shit so much. They and you missed a lot of details because you are mentality retarded and didn't lurk.
>>
>>458342
I disagree to an extent. All you have to do is look at how the content of "edgy" subreddits is becoming less and less offensive, racist, sexist, gory; all the hallmarks of the "old internet culture".

I do agree that Reddit and 4chan users are typically the same demographic, but the moderation system is the real issue. The amount of pseudo psychology Reddit mods use to control their subreddits (some even act like they own the place) is so orwellian it's legitimately creepy. Makes the mod bullshit here look like good natured bantz.

Small groups of mods controlling all major subs. Same group of mods worm their way into subs they want to control, and usually get it through attrition. Mods discussing with other mods methods to controlling their subscribers, weeding out what pretty much equates to wrongthink.

All in all, the userbase of Reddit might not be very PC, but the mod base sure as hell is. They have no qualms with controlling narratives either.

This election cycle is the tipping point for the PC push. Reddit creams itself for Bernie, so equating anything non-PC with anti-Bernie just made it inevitable.

The combination of shitty modding tools, shitty mods, upvoting/downvoting, popularity, and post attached to profiles is how Reddit lost its discourse. If you dare say the wrong things you end up with a mob following you around Reddit downvoting on all of your comments and slandering you at every turn. Reddit makes it so easy too. First thing that comes up when you click a profile name is their recent post, so you can just downvote away.

I mean, we always knew the voting system would eventually collapse Reddit. I just never thought it would become like e-highschool drama central.
>>
>>458151
I actually once did a strawpoll across many popular 4chan boards a while back and maybe about 23% of 4chan users also browsed reddit
>>
>>458374
You mean like wordfilters, spamfiltering the names of certain websites, built in JS options for users to filter words they don't like, banning discussion of things that aren't listed in the rules, and oh wait that's 4chan.
>>
>>458374
Everything you just said is easily explained by the fact that the large subreddits get that way because like minded individuals agree with that sort of thinking. For every /r/sandersforpresident there's an /r/the_donald. Of course the mods for those subreddits promote a groupthink. We do that shit on 4chan with our moderators and admins too. Why do you think 4chan wasn't allowed to talk about gamergate? Because the mods AND A LARGE GROUP OF USERS both wanted that shit gone. And then people left 4chan to go make eightchin if they wanted desperately to not be censored about who Zoe slept with and whether or not they want to rape and murder Anita Sanitarium.

The point to all of this is these sites are too large to have a homogeneous userbase where everybody agrees on something. It is trivial to find a redditor who agrees with or disagrees with literally any notion you could come up with. There's literally a subreddit full of people who won't have kids and believe that the human race should willfully die out. It's small, but it's there. https://www.reddit.com/r/vhemt It makes just as much sense to accuse all of reddit of thinking like the majority subset of /r/politics or /r/funny as it does to say that all of 4chan thinks like the majority subset of /pol/ and /b/. In fact, it makes even less sense on Reddit, because the "Long tail" is so much longer there since you have infinity many boards.

By the way, the most conservative social network on the internet is Facebook.

i think the reddit problem depends on what board you're on. for example, /vp/ doesn't have as much of a reddit problem as say, /mu/ or /fa/. redditors consistently shit up the latter two boards, and when called out on being redditors just say some dumb shit like ">site warfare in 2016". they don't even try to hide it anymore, they embrace it. it's disgusting to be honest.

I'm not using it to say my opinion matters more than anyone else's, I'm using it to emphasize how important 4chan is to me. For these Redditors, they don't give a shit. They just came here to shitpost and don't give a fuck about the consequences, because they get to feel edgy and counterculture since they go on 4chan.
For a lot of us who spent much of their lives here, myself included, we actually DO give a shit about the quality of the boards/posts/posters, because nobody wants to see the website that they grew so attached too turn to shit because of a few kids who don't understand their impact.
>>
>>461524
Then we have
>angry Reddit proxies that bitch about mods
>Redditors who are less upfront about it, meaning they don't get banned and also we can't automatically discard what they say in an attempt to chase them off
>more Redditors coming in
I agree that it's a much needed first step, but there need to be more steps taken to truly finish off the last of their ranks.

I don't use it. I tried it once just so that I could say I gave it a fair shot, made like 3 posts but it was almost identical to what I expected except formatted worse somehow. Most of my Reddit knowledge is from primary sources though (friends, idiots on /int/ who post Reddit links, Redditors ITT, etc.), so it's really not strawmanning to talk about them.
>>
>>463559
Those aren't compelling "primary sources"; the last two do not prove that it's site-wide, just a few threads on /int/ and potential shitposters in this thread. "But they're similar!" Still argumentative. (For compassion's sake, I will not question why you have "friends" who are Redditors.)

You simply have not provided enough to justify your status as an official Reddit Expert. (I won't comment on how thoroughly sad that is. Maybe it would be for the best if you're a failure in this regard?)

Also,
>I don't use it, except for when I do.

>/vp/ doesn't have as much of a reddit problem as say, /mu/ or /fa/

XY leaks onward pretty much completely swarmed /vp/ with redditors, I'm afraid, so you'd be quite wrong on that. An early leak anon doing an LP posted that he was frustrated by an "OVER 9000 XD" reference and within 5 minutes it was harvesting karma on reddit.

Then again /vp/ has always had perennial idiot / underage problems so there's really no saving it.
>>
>>463658
I'm confused as to what you're saying here. On one hand, you agree with that guy, saying I'm a Redditor who somehow gets a kick out of trying to actually help fix a problem that the whole site faces, but on the other hand, you said "this" to my post calling the previous post bait.

So which is it? Is the post bait or do you agree with it?
>>
To the people defending reddit in this thread

the normalfag-humor "main" subreddits are fucking atrocious circle-jerks and more than justify the amount of hate that site gets here. Half of the content is human interest facebook pablum and the other half is bad, unfunny "ironic" puns and RANDUMMMBBB XD humor from the same kind of people who think Jack Black is funny.

I mean, saying "TODAY I LEARNED" is so common on that website that it's an acronym. Everyone that posts on reddit seems to just have this faux-childish cutesy diction that is so trite and irritating that it's hard not to hate the site and it's users. You can almost easily spot a reddit poster by their comments on here.

Also, the upvote/downvote system kills discussion. If you post an unpopular opinion that does mesh with the circlejerking, hivemind, thinktank you'll be downvoted and unseen.
>>
About a month ago, the mods enacted that "reddit boogeyman shitposting" rule, and were on fire with banning people who said it for about 2 weeks. Then it died off. Can't they try that again, with filtering the word "reddit" like they used to?
>>
>>463883

The point isn't to ban people accusing others of reddit, it's to get actual redditors to fuck off.

>>
>>464197
Read the posts complaining about Reddit in this very thread.
>>
>>457018
You need to learn that it isn't the identity of the person who makes the post that's important, it's the content they post. Reading tea leaves to deduce that a person visits another site and that their arguments are therefore invalid is not only fallacious, but against the spirit of anonymous discussion.
>>
>>464204
Being on a website for long enough affects the quality of your posts, especially on a website with an upvote-downvote system that shows the most popular content at the top and the least popular at the bottom. It trains the userbase to try to imitate the most popular comments in order to get some sort of recognition, which drives almost everyone to talk the same and make the same types of jokes.

Now that I've established that Redditors are indoctrinated into a certain type of posting, I'd refer you to >>463871 for a good summary of what it is specifically about their type of posting that is incongruent with 4chan as a whole.

So, basically, they post on Reddit for a while, start acting like all the other Redditors, and then come post here, bringing the Reddit posting style with them. If Redditors weren't influenced at all by the sites they visited and were able to come onto 4chan and actually post like one of us, I wouldn't care. But, obviously it does affect them, which is why I'm calling them out specifically and not trying to address the wild goose chase of keeping all shitposters off of the site.
>>
>>464367
The principles of not caring about who posters are and not trying to control how users spend their time online trumps your speculative (or hypocritical, if you are a shitposter and Redditor yourself) concerns.

>the wild goose chase of keeping all shitposters off of the site
That's pretty stupid. To keep shitposters in general off the site, you just need to delete shitposts, which also removes Redditors if you are correct about them being shitposters. To keep Redditors in particular off the site, you need to first convince yourself that Redditors are a problem, then read Reddit to figure out how Redditors post, then make wild guesses at who on 4chan is a Redditor, then go around deleting their posts regardless of quality to prevent their hypothetical future shitposting.

OP's idea of just perma banning everyone who mentions reddit is a better idea.

Also ban mobile posters to make it harder for them to shitpost.

If there was a find out if a person has an account on Reddit and be able to ban people based on that, that would be the best way to deal with this problem. Hell, we could apply it to other sites like NeoFag and deal with foreign belligerents.
