The captcha was turned on after Cornelia, not Anontalk. It was created because moot got too lazy to write another filter. A saner implementation would have been to create a broad filter, then require captcha for only posts triggering the filter. Late Anontalk spam was so full of Unicode-lookalike characters that it was easy to filter just on that property alone. The site also doesn't exist anymore.

Someone clearly wasn't here shortly after MLP started airing but before GR15. Every thread. Every. Fucking. Thread. there was at least one pony reaction image in it. Not even a good one, not even one that made any sense or went with the post or thread, they were posted by horsefuckers because they fucking could.
