Those tend to not be as bad as generals on other boards because on /a/ they are mostly just temporary. It's general while the series is airing and then it dies off and you get new material with new series.
The more permanent generals of other boards tend to be cesspools of pure cancer.
Also, some people would still argue that even on /a/ it would be better without generals because the environment is more fun and relaxing. Not everyone is as concerned with the quality of discussion as you might think.

Generals are actually against the rules and should be banned.
You can't get through to our nipponese overlord without using nipponese logic. If you take a step back, you'll see that 4chan itself is actually one giant board, with each board being a thread for a specific topic, and each thread is a reply chain within that thread. From this position, it's obvious that generals break global rule 3 (no off-topic) and the soft rule regarding meta-threads. They are threads about threads, and all the shitposting towards and from them, and the type of poster they attract, is the natural result of them.
There will always be recurring threads (wich 2hu wud u fuk??), but they all have a topic. There are only two solutions to the General Question: a SINGLE non-specific thread per board akin to the 雑談・愚痴 threads in Japan; or banishing them all to /b/.
Why not just make a 4chang.org?
So many boards are filled with this cancer and its users do not belong here in the first place.
