Will the oldfag cutoff always be 2006?
I mean, let's say 4chan is still around by 2030, will there even be any "true" oldfags left? People meme about never leaving 4chan being impossible but obviously, it happens. Eventually an entire generation will have gone by and then anyone who was around in the 00s will be old as fuck, there will be few if any of them left. People older than 4chan itself will be posting (they already are tbqh), and nobody wants to be that 40 year old guy who browses an anime imageboard.
>>

i'll do my best to wizard all the way up to 2030, just ypu wait

*younger

wew lad
>>
>>480216
the scale has to move on at some point and in some ways it already has

three years ago used to shitpost you to death if you told them you started browsing any later than 06 but it seems like 09 is the new cutoff
>>
>>480216
I thought it was 2007/2008

1. there are already many 50+ year olds here
2. this isn't an anime imageboard anymore and hasn't been in a decade
>>
>>480216
the website will probably die at one point, there's no reason to assume it will run forever

Even massive websites like Facebook and Google can one day be dust in the wind.
>>
I came around in 07, I won't be getting married or having kids, so there is a very good chance I'll be here by 2030 if I haven't died.
>>
>>480216
I think that it's easier to just assume anyone who has been here 10+ years is an oldfag, rather than have there be a specific cutoff year for the status. Because if you've been on the site for that long, you've definitely seen 4chan go through enough eras and can tell if some happening is history repeating itself or is actually something important. (Plus, by then you're probably an adult with other crap to care about, e.g. moot.) By this definition, in 2030, an oldfag would be someone who started going to 4chan in 2020.

Of course you'll still find some people who've been around here since 2003/2004 still visiting here in 2030, but they'll probably be sparse enough that one cannot recognize another even if one brings up some obscure old meme.

I'd like to think by then 4chan will have some differences in the auto-filename thing when pictures are posted. So different eras could recognize each other with filenames like this

I'd consider the oldfag cutoff to always be around 2006-2008. In the future, maybe up to 2011 at most. Anything 2012+ is pushing it, since that's when it started getting way more attention from all sorts of faggots.
>>
>>480654
it's a Unix timestamp so yeah
>>
>>480216
>Will the oldfag cutoff always be 2006?
It's not even that now. Oldfag is an ambiguous term. Most recently the cap I've seen claimed is 2013, while the minimum I've seen is 2004. The cap claimed will almost certainly always be a year or two before [current year]. Other than having that range, I've never seen a serious attempt to see what the median for what people think 'oldfag' means.
>>
>>480216
i'm from 05 and consider everyone post 08 to be cancer
>>
I'll break it into groups depending on major events.

ancientfags: the founding
oldfags: before Chanology
agingfags: before Gamergate
newfags: everyone else
>>
>>480237
>Implying there aren't 12 year olds posting on 4chan.
Have you seen some of the post quality around here?
>>
Who gives a shit. I was around for founding and that doesn't make me better than you. It is honestly ridiculous how hard 4chan tries to give meaning and value to reputation and seniority on a website that's supposed to be about being anonymous. Who fucking gives a shit if you were here yesterday or not? 4chan's one of the few places where you don't have a user page that shows how long you've been registered for.

Real oldfags are necessary for beating people pretending to be oldfags around the head.

i started using 4chan in 2006.
it's been ten years and i still feel like a newfag.
>>
>>480216
>Will the oldfag cutoff always be 2006?
Yes. 2007 saw a compeltely new breed of outsiders who come from a frame of reference that is entirely alien to the anons who populated the site and allowed it to survive. If 4chan started up in 2007 and the same breed of American teenagers found the site, it wouldn't have lasted till now. 4chan as a whole is still riding on the inertia we generated from 2003 to 2006.

>People older than 4chan itself will be posting (they already are tbqh), and nobody wants to be that 40 year old guy who browses an anime imageboard.
You see: you are part of the alien mindset that doesn't understand anonymous imageboards. It does matter if you are 20, 40, or 90. No one else knows and will likely ever know.
>>
>>480766
No.
If you found the site during or after the second eternal September, you are a newfag by default.
>>
>>480766
yeah, chanology is what I'd call the oldfag cutoff
>>
>>480880
You'll know.
>>
2011 now
>>
>>480216
2009 is the current cutoff.

I'm curious what a poll would average to:

Being an oldfag is a state of mind. So, essentially, an illusion.
>>
Oldfaggotry is more like vintage.
It's like, no matter how long you live you'll never just become a baby boomer.

I've used 4chan almost half my life. But I'll never not be a 2007 newfag.
>>
>>481190
>>481195
Ahaha. I love how the cutoff keeps changing to show how meaningless the concept of a cutoff actually is. If it were a thing that people truly cared about, the "cutoff" would never have changed. As it is, it's just some arbitrary number nobody can agree with.
>>
>>481933
You just indirectly admitted to being underage.
>>
>>481944
In a summary

>everyone hated the site in 2003 and they didn't even know who moot was.

>2004-2005 was more of a peak where people would go to have quality fun with well planned out trolls and well made memes or videos

>late 2005-2006 is when people became "Cancerous" and started being edgy etc.

>2007 people started hearing about the site and it was blowing up and letting in a shit ton of new people

>in 2008 everyone was just getting referred by their friends to join the site and a bunch of random faggots joined with no knowledge of anything.

>2009-2016 absolute death just instilled. and people would talk about cancer, get into an argument every thread on any topic, whine like a bitch, post no quality, gay trolls. Everything just sucked during this era, yet it is the most popular era of the website... i wonder why.
>>
also i don't really have any old screenshots left except the one and only.

But I had a lot of screenshots from 2004 and it was really just a more fun website.

I would say indefinitely that somewhere in 2005 was the real cutoff
>>
>>481951
2003-2005 = [s4s] + content + intelligence
2006-2007 = modern day /b/ - porn - retards

Math, anon. Math.

I'm 22 in a week. I've been here since I was 12. That's scary to think about.
>>
>>481960
I'll be honest, I figured the math was right but didn't want to do it myself so I accused you of being underage so that you would do it and I wouldn't have to. You're right though, that's still pretty fucked up.

The cut off will always be 2006 because that is when there first big wave of (social) media attention opened the floodgates to 4chan. The habbo raids brought the first big batch of newfags.
>>
>>480216
>People meme about never leaving 4chan being impossible but obviously, it happens.
Not to me. I'll be here until the website dies or until I die. It's not like I had anything better to do.

>>484060
I go on /a/ and even I wouldn't consider Endless 8 to be some sort of oldfag separating event. It'd be like separating people by pre-MLP and post-MLP. Not to mention not everyone here watches anime, and even people who do may not have watched Haruhi when it was airing just because it didn't interest them.
>>
>>480621

>This an anime site

>>
>>484065
E8 was not a mere anime event. This shit was such a big deal it shook the foundations of the entire site. If you didn't know of it, YOU DID NOT GO TO 4CHAN.
>>
>>484078
who cares
>>
>>484082
Fuck you, Olivia. The last thing we need is more newfags like yourself.
>>
>>484087
How do I add you to my friends list?
>>
>>484065
MLP had more impact to the overall site than Endless 8 did, so it'd have a better argument for being a divider. I don't know why some people bring up arbitrary board-level divisions when people are talking about site-wide divisions.
>>
>>484091
The friends feature is down right now so I don't think she'll be able to comply, but while you wait you can add me on Reddit. My username is Fartikus.
