Lots of moderates are being driven to the right because the left has turned towards extremism in recent years, leading to polarization. Weebs, like most "nerd" groups, were long generally more left-leaning than right largely because of what the right wing used to be. It was right-wingers who hated anything foreign, who wanted to ban that sick filth with all the breasts and gay anime girls and all sorts of degenerate things like that, and in general "nerd" groups tended to be ostracized by the wider society, which was, at the time, largely center-right. However, the rise of both left-wing authoritarians and right-wing libertarians has thrown the entire political spectrum out of whack. Groups like weeaboos are stuck in the middle, suddenly finding themselves agreeing with the right wing on some things, while seeing the reactionary, censorial side of the left coming to light.
And yet, for many, the memory of what the right wing did when they ruled the zeitgeist. This has led to many feeling lost and confused, not knowing where they stand, but knowing that they don't like things as they are now, they don't like things as they were in the past, and they don't like how things seem to be going. And so, people from not just weeaboo and nerd circles but all across the political and social map are dissatisfied. Many want things to just go completely differently from how they are going now, no matter what way that is. Many want things to just make sense to them again, but need it to have a new coat of paint to get behind it. And many more have just given up and see everything as an absurd dance, and they will simply play their part by passing along whatever meme (the psychological phenomenon or the internet jokes both work here) seems to be what everyone else is obsessed with. The lines aren't just being redrawn, they're being eaten and shat out. The establishment is a shambles, on both sides of the aisle.
As for who's posting the anime girls with the MAGA hats, it's both of those groups and more--the jokers, the cells of the hivemind, and everything else.
