They had no idea whether he'd been drinking.
They were moonlighting for a fucking part-time bus driver, who has severe boundary issues regarding his authority. Even the Mayor says he can't get hold of the guy.
One of them wasn't even a full cop.
There is stuff coming to light about Mr Few having previous altercations with at least one of these officers due to his previous position.
There is, at present, only the officers word they were in any danger from Mr Few's vehicle, as any video evidence hasn't been released yet.
The officers have been given "a rest period" before being interviewed (presumably in order for them to be getting their story straight).
What happened to due process here?
Why do cops get a leave of absence before being interviewed? Isn't it important to get all the facts down quickly, while they are still fresh in everybody's mind?
What happened to reasonable suspicion? Why did a chase without apparent cause end up in a one-sided shooting range confrontation?
How is Mr Few's previous police interactions relevant? Maybe, if you're so scared of a man and his reputation that you will blindly open fire, you don't belong in the police force?

The boy was in the front seat, so it's looking increasingly likely that the cops wanted to make Mr Few move his son to the back seat (as prescribed by state law).
