I remember when this happened. 2004 was the first race I ever paid attention to. The story was Dean trying to shout in order to be heard due to the crowd being so loud and out of control however it came across as him being nuts. To be fair it did look and sound really weird.

Three years after this happened Karl Rove put out a memoir where he plainly states he feared Dean and Edwards(this is '04 remember) the most of any of the candidates running. Edwards was feared because he was a moderate southerner with great communicative skills. Dean was feared because he wasn't afraid to draw contrasts and since the country didn't really want to re-elect Bush, Rove feared a candidate that would present himself as a credible alternative.

It's sad since listening to Dean in 03 and 04 was like reading a newspaper from 2-3 years in the future.
>>
>>55236584

He was talking about leading a revolutionary people's army to take control of the countryside, swallowing up states before finally marching on DC and storming the center of government.
>>
>>55236584
In case of no trolling. Dean's plan was to not only focus on crucial battleground states like Gore did in 2000 and instead have grass root movements in all states.

FAst forward 4 years and as chairman of the DNC he instated many of hid plans. Given, Obama would've won with all the Gore states plus swing states but the grass movement helped turn colorado, IA. and even Indiana Blue.

>Edwards was feared because he was a moderate southerner with great communicative skills

Negroid please. Edwards was a shitty knock off of Bubba Clinton, and got has ass absolutely destroyed by Chaney in the VP debates

>muh mill worker daddy
>muh flickering TV

What a fucking joke
>>
>>55236975
Dean was the front runner and knew how to use the internet for funds,
I watched it live on tv and thought not much of it. What happened next was the RNC taking the footage and ran with it
>>
>>55236975
Same. I was so excited for Dean. And then it all fell apart because he was too enthusiastic over not winning.
>>
>>55237095
This.

He invested in state parties across the country and in organizing the grassroots. It's hard to remember how demoralized the Democrats were after 2004 especially after seeing what happened just 4 years later, a Democratic landslide at every level of government. Sure the Iraq War and the financial crisis helped sweep the Dems into office but Dean played a big part in this as well.

Also, his '04 run was equally about reforming the Democratic Party as much as beating the GOP.
>>
>>55236584
My understanding is that he had a flu and everyone was shouting, it so happened that a combination of the crowd getting silent at that moment and his cracked voice was the culprit.

In regards to his speech, he was being typical by stating that his supporters will give him the support in those states and then he will set up shop in the W.H.
>>
>>55236584
If you "lose an election" due to a funny sounding scream then you never really had a chance of winning in the first place.
>>
>>55237195
I never said it turned out well anon. Rove was fearing him before he was selected to be Kerry's VP, before the late summer.
>>
>>55237287
I liked Dean alot and was exited about him running but I honestly never thought Bush had a chance of losing. Hindsight aside, the Iraq war was not detested by the majority of Americans.

y the time 08 rolled, any Democrat would have beaten any republic,
>>
I hate Howard Dean but this shit was blown way out of proportion by the media, one of the dumbest fucking things I've ever seen turned into a controversy.
>>
>>55237673
I thought it was weird that Bush could lose too. After 9/11 and in a time of war, even a controversial war, it was a strange thought that a President could be in trouble for re-election. But the economy wasn't as good as it could have been and there was a general dissatisfaction with the direction the country was moving. Despite national tragedy the country wanted a change but they didn't think Kerry was the man to give it to them. They were right I think.
>>
>>55237282
Oh shit that's right, now i remember why I was watching live, it was after losing Iowa,

Wasn't he trying to copy a photo op with Thatcher in the UK?
She wore a scarf and looked girly but like she was having fun. Dukakis looked like a fucking doofus. He would have been better with an army baseball cap and some earphones to communicate instead of a giant transformers helmet.
>>
>>55237835
Is Michael Dukakis the worst nominee in recent memory?
>being overshadowed by your running mate
>>
>>55238045
The guy who ran against Nixon in 72 was a fucking disaster too.

By far the weakest since Dukakis was Kerry and he was the best candidate their had for a reelection cycle wherr the big candidates tend to stay away

Romney was worse than both of those guys. Obama in 2012 was a president who didn't fulfill his campaign promises (some his fault, but many weren't). The right wing was pissy about Obamacare still, we still weren't fully out of Iraq/the stan, the economy was still in the tank. There was no segment of the population (moderates, liberals, conservatives, progressives, teahadists) that was happy with the Obama presidency.

It's almost impossible to have lost that election but Romney somehow pulled it off.

Ah fucken guy he's nuts he's a dictator way out of left field oh God my ears are bleeding
>>
I remember this.

Here are the takeaways:

>His voice cracked when addressing a rally

>Media used this as a way to push their guy since they did not like the Vt. outsider candidate.

>He got on TV doing damage control.

>Could have just said, "My voice cracked because I was hoarse, I sure sounded dumb!"

>Instead he goes with "That's totally normal for me, this behavior is totally normal!"

and that is how a race ended. Because a grown man in his 50s was to embarassed to admit his voice cracked.

The MSM ate him alive.
>>
>>55238307
God, Al Gore is a fucking loser
>>
>>55238422
Romney losing was all on the campaign he ran. and how Obama was able to define him before he was known to the public.
>>
>>55238447
fuck off beaner
>>
>>55238546
he's so fucking smug that he made george w come across as cool and likable
>>
>>55238561
That's why Romney is such a huge failure.

In retrospect Dukakis in 88 or Kerry in 04 there weren't any alternatives. It's not like the Dems just nominated the wrong guy, there just wasn't a winning option.

There were probably 8 different Republicans who could have won the election in 2012, the base hated all of them and dragged Romney so far right on economics that Obama's team buried him so deep he couldn't escape.

It really feels like the same thing's happening this year. The Republican primaries are designed to nominate an extremist instead of a moderate. The system doesn't work.

george w is actually cool and likable, period. just wasn't a good president.
>>
>>55238652
I agree that Kerry was the best option, he just never had a chance.

However, of those who ran in 12 who could have beaten Obama?
Huck ? nope
Santorum? nope
Newt ? lel
It's happening grandpa?

Romney was the only candidate and the RNC tried their hardest to frind an alternative before realizing that he was going to win the nomination
>>
>>55238829
I agree Obama wasn't getting beat in '12.

Current Trump would have had a much better chance than Romney, but he played his cards right by waiting until now. Incumbents are hard to beat, incumbents who inherited a mess are very hard to beat if they've made any progress at all, they get a huge benefit of the doubt.

I'd argue that Christie would have stood a better chance because the Republican party wasn't yet in full retard mode (aka: Freedom Caucus mode). And more importantly, pic related had not happened yet and would have been a non-issue if it had happened.

The problem with the GOP is the problem the Democrats used to have.
They want to nominate someway too far out and extreme who can't win the general election. It's a shame because the country doesn't really want Hillary but that's who the country is going to get because of GOP incompetence and extremism.
>>
>>55239353
All the GOP needs is Cruz getting to a platform where he can out debate other Republicans.

Cruz/<Insert Rhino candidate>

Carson is just not happening.

Now if Trump keeps it up then who the fuck knows
>>
>>55239439

Cruz is literally the least likely candidate to win the general (besides the literally who?-tier candidates). He's far too conservative to attract moderates. It's never, ever happening.
>>
>>55239439
The general public doesn't mind a candidate who is conservative just as they don't mind a candidate who is liberal. But Cruz may be a step too far. He already has made a lot of statements that the country just doesn't agree with. Also he's the most 'Underwood-ian' of the GOP candidates running imho.
>>
>>55239353
>They want to nominate someway too far out and extreme who can't win the general election.
What is... Obama
>>
>>55239722
He's actually governed as a very moderate Democrat. This is /pol/ and we can bullshit back and forth about this but his policies are mostly GOP ideas that have been tweaked for liberal sensibilities.
