Germany needed oil from the south of Caucases and went south to get it. Stalingrad was on the flank and was a major hub of trasnportation moving goods from the south to the east where Stalins army was.
Hitler and the army agreed that controlling Stalingrad was a valuable target for moral and to hurt logistics of the Red army.
The 6th army of 240,000 Germans went in and got about 90% of the way through the city. On hte north and south sides were romanians and italians defending the flanks.
A theme of the war was German intelligence always underestimating Soviet production and reserves. Soviets ended up having about 50% more men at the battle than the Germans as Stalin zerged the area iwth almost all he had while Germany was surprised he cared that much about it.
The italians were using rifles designed in 1870 and weren't really equipped to fight russians with state of the art tanks and weapons. The flanks both collapsed and the Germans got surrounded in the city.
That degenerate Gorring really was a good pilate and loyal Nazi was a good choice as leader of the Luftwaffe on paper but ended up being complete shit. He promised Hitler he could drop in supplies for the army so they could hold out while the germans pushed the red army back.
Gorring couldn't do it. The 6th army held out until food and ammunition was gone and finally of the 240,000 sent to the city 91,000 surrendered and were sent to siberian camps. 6,000 would return to germany years later.
General Paulus remains the only German Field Marshall to ever surrender.
