It's important to understand that polling is generally very different from actual elections.
In elections, the totality of Democrat voters vs. Republican voters plays a role. Everything up until now indicates that there are more Republicans voting than Democrats. Democrat turnout was at a record low during the primaries, and Democrats in general aren't very thrilled about their candidates this year, for a couple of reasons. In 2008, when Obama was elected, he was the first black presidential candidate for a major party, and they came from 8 years of Republican rule. In America, it is extremely rare that any party gets more than 8 years in the presidency (it has only happened 3-4 times in history).
In polls, the pollsters try to weigh Democrat and Republican voters as accurately as possible (assuming they're honest), and should try to split Republican and Democrats either 50/50 in their samples, or weigh the sample according to the assumed number of Republican vs. Democrat voters that will actually turn up to vote in the GE.
And here's the issue: we know for a fact that pollsters over-sample Democrats in virtually every poll. Only Rasmussen has data that allows for more accurate polling -- and they almost always has Trump ahead. Pollsters using land lines almost always over-sample urban centers, where the Democrat voters are concentrated. Look at Brexit: urban centers voted overwhelmingly for 'Remain', but rural areas still won because pollsters don't sample urban areas as much.
Sometimes, it's better to go for "registered Republican voters" and "registered Democrat voters" polls, but for the national polls, they will always favor Democrats.
In reality, though, I think Trump has a huge lead when it comes to actual turnout. Republicans had the highest turnout in history, and Democrats were at an all-time low. Sure, Democrats are still head-to-head in terms of the raw number of voters, but it's still an indication Republicans will come out in droves.
