The wine actually takes very little, the nuts take alot though. Both are cash crops/products though and definitely one can argue whether we should use the land for other things though. And we do grow alot of Alfalfa for animals here.
Also keep in mind that certain things grow very well in certain areas. Case in point is citrus trees (orange, lemon/lime, grapefruit) that grow all over SoCal with little to no care. They're not watered, they're in shitty areas, sometimes fully desert, and so on. But they pop up and survive like nothing.
In the case of agriculture in California, there is a TON of things that will grow here no problem, especially in San Jauqin Valley. Tell me they can just as easily grow strawberries in Nebraska, North Dakota, or even Oklahoma compared to California.
