Lived there for 2 years for 6th and 7th grade, specifically in Valinhos, Sao Paulo, but I took the bus to a nearby city in Campinas to go to an American-Brazilian school. At first I really hated it, I hated being dropped into a country where I barely spoke the language and had no friends. Didn't help that I was a slightly autistic spaz in middle school.
Had to live in a gated community, with a bullet proof car, my school had a wall surrounding it. Streets are dangerous and Brazilian culture is kinda mean. I also really hated how everything on TV was behind about 4 years, its as if you time traveled back into the past. There were some things I liked though.
First off, in the short time I was there, my school had an AMAZING field trip. We took a bus to a sort of summer camp. We visited a swamp full of crabs and swam in it. Then we hiked through a tropical forest and swam in the rivers. Then we had this big party where we were in bathing suits and had a pool. There was a part where it was a bouncy castle but full of soap and you got to wrestle with everyone all lathered in soap. This is a field trip for 3 days it was pretty amazing.
Aside from that, some more minute appreciates is that Brazilian people are kind a very friendly. Its a more collectivist society, which in my opinion is where most of Brazil's struggles come from. But it also makes it easy to make friends and hang out. I also love misto quente and bauro, very delicious.
Honestly you can live like a king in Brazil with money but the governmental bureaucracy is horrible. Brazilians have the opposite mentality to that of Americans, in that they expect all of their solutions to come from the government. So they tolerate the immense bureaucracy.
There was this one time where I was talking to this Black Brazilian, and I was really nervous so I stuttered a lot with my Portuguese. All he said in response was that he was happy that an Argentinean was trying to learn his language... Even though I'm American, lel
