I would recommend Hearts of Iron, Europa Universalis, Crusader Kings, and Imperial Glory. The graphics in the older total war games might be a little dated but that doesn't make the any less fun to play. If it's the graphics putting you off trying starting off with one of the newer titles like Attila or Rome 2.

Rome is a nice classic. While Napoleon is Empire, with more diversity (Read: Unit diversity) Instead of having all the major empires have all those just slightly recolored/Renamed units, Napoleon bring alot more to pick from on the table.
Rome I Is pretty damn easy but you can mod it from scrap, Darthmod is recommended for a 400% Realism overhaul.
Shogun II is cool too, Like empire, All units are Generic, But there's 2 DLCs to boost the game. The DLC you should get the most for Shogun II is "Fall of the Samurai" It bring brits, French, and colonials as the Era of Samurai reach it's end.

The studies have been analyzed by Richard Lynn, a British psychologist, and Tatu Vanhanen, the Finnish political scientist. The subsequent work has been done by Jelte Wicherts, a Dutch psychologist.
According to the list, Singapore (108), South Korea (106) and Japan (105) came to first five places, followed by Italy (102), Mongolia and Iceland (101). The Ottomans were scientifically ahead of Europeans in many areas and had some of the best equipped and trained musketmen (Janissaries) and manufactured the best cannons in Europe for a very long time. For the first several hundred years of the Ottoman Empire, scientific discoveries were still flowing East to West and European scholars were learning Arabic to read it (Arabic being the lingua franca of the sciences in the Islamic World).

And the Austrians ended up studying the military tactics of another Turk to defeat the Ottomans. Nader Shah (he was ethnically a Turk but became Shah of Persia) created the best military in the world during the 18th century and manufactured their own brand of firearms, which was more like a handheld cannon.

The sector management system is a bit fucked, so I'm pretty choosy with my planets. I haven't really had that much game time, so I found it easier to terraform worlds or just heavily fortify strategic systems, instead of playing more complicated ( and I imagine time consuming) routes to victory (I rule everything). Fun game anyway, even if it was made by fags that tried to make an argument for a diverse ecosystem by making it easiest to win through extermination.
