"There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is no male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus."
What did he mean by this?
How did the authors of the "Bible" know that Heaven and Hell exists?
>>79647202
He means women are to be able to by on the ground with the men (instead of having to sit in cordoned balconies, as was the prior Jewish custom), and that Jews and Greeks are not to have separate parishes, and that slaves and free are not to have separate places of worship.

You're making Christians look even more retarded than they normally look.
>>79648808
That's Orthodox doctrine, dude. Heaven and hell are just being permeated by God, we're already in them. When you become fully conscious, the permeating is either light (bliss, heaven) or fire (agony, hell). That's the source of light for things like halos, it was so strong for Moses he had to wear a veil

Crusades would have been cool if it had been the church leading the armies instead of various nobles going of their own volition.
Anyone familiar with this Bible? I'm thinking about getting it.
>>79649563
I'd get the RSV if you're going that route. It avoids the shitty inclusive language and, imo, reads a lot better. I've got a pocket sized bible with apocrypha that's RSV, I can't recommend it enough.

The RCC is right, Peter is the rock (but all Apostles are also rocks, as per Saint Jerome, and Revelation 21:14, but Peter is the rock of rocks). However, there seems to be a confusion as to what that means: it has to do with Peter's role in *founding* the Church, obviously a role that isn't passed on. And it is not an office Peter holds distinction from bishop, in 1 Peter 5 he appeals to other bishops merely as "a fellow bishop", not as any other office.
tl:dr Peter's person is the rock, not Peter's chair.

Liturgy of Saint Basil is great
My priest was out as well, but we had a replacement come in from a nearby monastery. My parish is Greek Orthodox, but he was a Romanian who didn't speak English that well, let alone Greek, but he gave a great sermon on how we in America often focus so much on freedom we forget that obedience is a virtue, whereas freedom is not a virtue, but a gift. He talked about how important obedience is in the family and the Church and society in general, but he was smiling the whole time and was very lighthearted about what would otherwise sound like a stern homily. He even said how when his mother sees him she tells him always to "be good", and thinks for a moment how ridiculous that she would tell him that since he's a monk and a priest, but then he remembers obedience and that she is his mother, and tries to apply her command.

Come home, Christian man.
What's the best way of experiencing as much Orthodoxy as possible without physically attending an Orthodox church?
Orthodoxy makes a lot of sense to me. I've read books from a strong proponent of their theology (despite the author himself actually being protestant just like me). I was also impressed by one book by Vladimir Lossky I read and his way of explaining the differences between western and eastern churches. Orthodox doctrine seem to fit my personality the best. I tent to get annoyed and disappointed in people whenever I attend protestant churches, even though the experience is far from 100% negative. But the focus on people seem to be a bit too strong, whereas in orthodoxy the focus seem to be on the liturgy. Thing is, there's no orthodox churches available close to where I live. What tricks do you recommend.. I don't want to move . I also want to more or less stay the recluse basement dweller I am. I'm not talking about a full substitute, I know there's no such thing.. but getting as close as possible so to speak.
>>79653237
>Rejoin the one universal Church
>A unified church
Is there really any current movement or something there to "unify" all the churches? Cant imagine something like that to happen (unless there are so few believers left that keeping all the branches apart doesnt benefit anyone anymore)
>>79652692
I think you're conflating "unified" with "centralized"

Got into an argument with a Muslim about Trump. He said trump is racist because he wants to ban all Muslims. I told him only temporarily so that they can be vetted before being let in. I have him the example that Israelis would be banned from Saudi Arabia and would have to go through vetting before being let in for tied to Mossad.
Then he said that 90% of the world has to be Muslim because his said so in the Quran. He said that Europe will be Muslim and then he said that there are 56 million Muslims in Western Europe now and that Europe will be eradicated by Muslims. He said this with a smile on his face and great joy.
I told him he's calling for holy war and he said yeah and that the west was losing and that we deserved it for Israel and our involvement in the Middle East.

Pretty much yes, Church is very anti-intellectual and for now as it is has little interest to spread or adapt - if it goes in a country - it tends to stick up for decades to same old eastern languages.
Even within countries that been orthodox for as long a sit was possible, the bible is not treated as an important translation - most orthodox countries today including Greece use a protestant criticaul study based translation - and ever since 1500 - with one exception for a small period of time, every single translation was pretty much based on protestant texts, there was once a print that was based pretty much entirely on codex alexandrinus.
With the exception of gospols which in 1904 were written as a "majority text" from some scrolls Mt. Athos had - there''s nothing official.
And even that, it's just there as a museum piece for now - because orthodox countries ignored it and still based their new testament translation of protestant versions.
Eastern Orthodoxy is mostly a money shitting machine at this point, people are not genuinely interested in it, world wide a great deal of clergy is just power hungry and interested to gain more for them and do as little as possible ( amazingly corruption within Church is smaller than corruption within other institutions ) - but it's still there.
At least Catholic church as corrupt as it is - handles its infrastructure and everything else much better.
I don't know what to believe anymore - there are two contemporany saints in Mt. Athos - St. Porphyrios and St. Paisios - they both contradicted each other, and pretty much had different philosophical approach over the whole scheme of things.
Paisios spoke about war, and it being blessed by God - he showed up on a tv show and done lots of questionable things...

>orthodox opinion
No, orthodox opinion is Jesus opinion and the words saints said they got from the Holy Spirit.
Also very importantly the canonical decisions of holy councils.
Lots of priests today give their un-orthodox opinions about situations that happen.
Our Church is not not of this world - it just looks fancy and seems to have an complex administration because people still hang on the Byzantine tradition, when they had a king to persuade into forcing with his army some canonical facts, and other state founded projects like art, architecture of Church.
Look where at the countries where orthodox is the majority - they aren't prosperous most of them, in some cases the suicide rates are higher than other places. Our Church again is not of this world and never was - just being orthodox does not make you a better citizen, you yourself make a better citizen.
Church opinion on such political matters and should be simply ignored from the start, don't waste your time with anti-intellectual opinions of some pseudo-smart priest

here's some iconography you idolater
>>79666370
That's a very nice thing to say anon, God bless you
>>79666090
So because I give you 20ish versions of the Bible and 19 agree with my argument, I'm a Protestant? Is everyone who is not in your Church a Protestant? I'm not asking you to trust me, I'm asking you to trust God.
Why would He only give your priest the power to be right? He created the Bible (or made sure it was made and preserved at least) so if 19/20 say to not take it literally I will trust God in the fact that at least 1 of those 19 have it right. If only yours waa right it would mean God did not protect His word enough to let it be corrupted 19 times. And I do not doubt Him to think that.
>>79666485
Are you taking the piss? I'm confused right now.
>>79666544
You can go and worship the bible too, "not" muslim.
>>79666544
Catholics and Orthodox are tradition-tards.
>>79666393
>As long as I ignore what he says and say that it is irrelevant I will win this argument.
The world is not made of yes/no answers. I gave you the tools to come to a conclusion yourself.
>>79666524
good night friend
>>79666721
Everything you have said is completely off topic drivel. Nobody could understand what your delusional brain wants them to.
>>79666668
I'm baptist.
Didn't want to say because it was hard enough to get a response to my actual argument in the first place.
Bring on the ad hominens
>>79666924
>I'm baptist.
I was raised baptist. You think I couldn't recognize baptist rhetoric?
>>79666924
me too.
>>79666910
I am painting a picture why we can't prove God and why that is the whole idea of a faith/love-based relationship. If you can prove it isn't love anymore but acknowledgement.
>>79645656
You are literally wanking on an imaginary character. How does it feel to be a moron?
>>79667000
Why did you go from a baptist to a tradition-based denomination? You don't see that very often.
>>79667141
You haven't done any of that but ramble about nonsense.
False equivalency and dishonest intellect don't sell yourself so fucking high.
>>79667141
prove it, it isn't***
>>79667291
I always hated it. It drove me away from Christianity as a whole at age 12. Much, much later (some 20 years) I came back into the church through C.S. Lewis's high church anglicanism. It was just a hop skip and a jump from there.
Everything about Protestantism makes my skin crawl. I can't stand it. It's a religion of a book, exactly the same as Islam.
I can't stand Christianity anymore.
My entire life I've been trying to live up to the impossible Christian standard and it has done nothing good for me. I'm sick of hearing about tolerance and self-sacrifice and praying for your enemies and turning the other cheek and shit.
I want my enemies to die and I don't want to make sacrifices for no good reason, I want to have money and not feel guilty about having money, and to be able to brag about being good at something instead of remaining humble while everyone treads all over me and tries to take advantage of me. Maybe Christianity would work if I wasn't surrounded by evil people all the time, and I wasn't constantly having to defend myself from being swindled and attacked.
I don't want to be a fucking victim my entire life but Christianity makes absolutely no room for defending oneself for the sake oneself, the only time you are allowed to ever take action is if God, the almighty creator and ruler of the fucking universe, is being disrespected. Why must I act on behalf of God, spread the gospel, give alms, etc... when he is able to do it himself? He doesn't need me at all, he doesn't need me to suffer for him, he just wants me to.
>but ur suffering is so insignificant
Well I didn't ask to be born for fucks sake, even a mote of suffering is unjust to someone unwillingly tossed into this shithole of a world.
There is literally nothing "good" about being a Christian, it's awful, it's degrading, it's the most unholy, ungracious, dishonest life I can possibly imagine. God has done not one thing for me, I can not recall once my prayers ever being answered, or myself experiencing a growing of faith, it's almost as if every tiny thing I've ever wanted has been intentionally kept away from me solely because I wanted it. God makes every effort to throw me into the dirt and ruin whatever faith I had.
>>79667293
How am I supposed to provide evidence-based arguments to a question where there is no possible definitive answer? You are asking an abstract question, you are getting an abstract reply.
Don't be a fedora and instead of actually debating and moving the conversation forward you throw a tantrum because I didn't use your rules perfectly.
You still haven't brought any argument to the table btw, great debat so far...
>>79667602
To be fair, this is exactly what the bible says will happen. Jesus doesn't promise an easy life, no matter how much Osteen and his ilk want to make it seem that way.
>>79667647
>You are asking an abstract question, you are getting an abstract reply.
False.
>Don't be a fedora and instead of actually debating and moving the conversation forward you throw a tantrum because I didn't use your rules perfectly.
Oh nice, assumptive insults.
>You still haven't brought any argument to the table btw, great debat so far...
Wasn't an argument, it was a question.
Reading comprehension.
>>79667453
But how can you trust corruptible man and verbal passing of scripture over written documentation? Especially since the Church went through a power high during the Middle ages and said everything to the people to keep them obedient and their Church rich and powerful?
>>79667737
And that's exactly why I can't be Christian anymore.
>>79667141
>>79667293
I believe both of you love God. But why are you trying to judge the other? Only God may judge which way of worship is right, and it is questionable whether He cares. I will say this: the baptist practice, far as it is from the apostolic ones, is certainly closer to God than atheism. In this time of cultural decadence, why do we waste our energy on intra-Christian quarrels?
>>79667805
Yes and I replied to tour question that you will never get a definitive answer and that that is the whole point.
Have a great day.
>>79667945
I'm agnostic.
>>79667829
>But how can you trust corruptible man and verbal passing of scripture over written documentation? Especially since the Church went through a power high during the Middle ages and said everything to the people to keep them obedient and their Church rich and powerful?
The Roman Church and the Eastern churches all agree on the essential bits of doctrine. It's really pretty easy to follow once you get it in your head that Jesus founded a church, he didn't write a book.
>>79667835
You know, you might like Joel Osteen. He's a heretic, and absolutely shit, but I think you'd like him.
>>79668013
>Yes and I replied to tour question that you will never get a definitive answer and that that is the whole point.
Could have said this instead of ramble about your nonsense. Rorschach psychology doesn't work the way you used it.
>>79668017
Wanted to quote this guy >>79666668
Sorry
>>79667945
>why do we waste our energy on intra-Christian quarrels?
I don't view protestants as Christians. They're idolaters on the same level as muslims.
>>79668260
Mormons are worse.
>>79667945
Because I love my Christian brothers and want to help them and warn them. Catholics are disrespecting God, Orthodoxys are idolators, Protestants are cherrypickers, (most) Baptist are way to judgemental.
We all need to fix this if we want to enter the narrow gates of Heaven and some denominations have bigger problems to fix than others. (Looking at the Catholics who changed the spine of Gods word: the Ten Commandments, so they could keep their riches). I am willing to judge myself the same way as I judge others.
>>79668318
Mormonism is simply the logical conclusion of protestantism. If the church does indeed need refounded, then God will send angels or something I dunno it's all shit.
>>79668383
>We all need to fix this if we want to enter the narrow gates of Heaven
Evidence?
>>79668396
Mormonism is a cult
Protestants don't believe dinosaurs existed.
Might have better luck arguing with holocaust deniers.
>>79668087
If I said that the first time you would ask me to elaborate and then you would habe gotten the reply I send you first.
No idea what that psychology thing is you mentioned
>>79668530
I can't be bothered with your rambling anymore.

Mormonism is literally
Islam volume 2: white power boogalo

I'm in a foul mood today, this has helped to keep me from being an ass to my wife, who does not deserve my ire. I've sequestered myself in my basement cave to argue religion on 4chan as a means of venting stress.
>>79667602
hahahaaa what a stupid statement! >There is literally nothing "good" about being a Christian, it's awful, it's degrading, it's the most unholy, ungracious, dishonest life I can possibly imagine.
Seriously? Welcome on Earth.
>>79668639
My basement is a batcave.
>>79668383
But don't you think it is vanity which pushes you to argue with others? How can you be certain that what you preach is right? But being absolute in your beliefs of Canon (not Dogma) is certainly not in the spirit of Christ.
>>79668639
>>79668383
In fact, I owe you something of an apology. I may not view you as a Christian, but you are acting as my brother in doing something that you think is good for me. According to the parable of the Good Samaritan, I shouldn't have been such a dick to you.
You're still wrong, but I'm sorry I was an ass.
>>79668437
If you believe than man is greater than God you are not saved from the hellfires. If you don't follow all of Gods law you are not saved.
Not everyone who think God is real will go to heaven.
Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.
Matthew:7:14

wow that really makes me think dude wow thanks
>>79668884
I hope at least one of us is on the right path, whoever that may be. Have a blessed day.

>How can you be certain that what you preach is right?
I have put trust in the Lord that what He made the most-read book on Earth is true. If it were not he would have intervened. I don't think He would do nothing when 6 billion people are heading away from God because of a book. God wants us all to be saved so He would have made it easily available to know how one gets saved.
>>79669341
And what is more easily available? The most read, most translated book that has ever existed. Or the teachings of the easily corruptible mind of a select few?
>>79669341
While I agree the bible is absolutely true, the interpretation of it is not. Presuming that you, a mere person, can understand the will of the lord is vane at least, if not heretical.
>>79669593
Do you deny the apostles were blessed by God?
