Agreed
Let Morality Man guide you cretins away from your evil ways

I am worried by the TV popularity of George R.R. Martin’s clever fantasy Game Of Thrones.

Mr Martin’s imaginary world is frighteningly cruel. The society it describes is far worse than the Middle Ages, because its characters are entirely unrestrained by Christian belief. There’s a lifeless, despised religion but nobody takes it seriously.

I fear it will make those who watch it worse people than they were before.

"We should let foreign companies buy out our country. Fuck the people, the only thing that matters in this world is money" - Thatcher, a British patriot who join the EU

"It is one of the main concerns of this study that the relentless international drive of capitalism has a compulsion to ignore national boundaries" - Ralph Miliband, communist who apparently hated the idea of nationhood

Who was right? Reminder, Ralph would have voted out, Thatcher would have voted in.

In fact the most terrible monsters are human, because what Martin is very good at describing is the shocking ruthlessness of naked power politics, unrestrained by law or God. He draws his characters cunningly, tempting the reader to misjudge them and showing them a wholly different aspect as events unfold.

I might add that he is unsparing in his description of the real cost of war, particularly to innocent people who have no power. And, as I said, I am impressed by the richness, originality and detail of Mr Martin’s imagination, which (I would guess) encompasses far more geography, genealogy, philosophy and history of his private world than he has shared with his readers).

What can it be compared with? Nothing that I know of. Tolkien is far more literary and poetic, and his work is written in an entirely different register. And ‘the Lord of the Rings’ can be read by children, which ‘Game of Thrones’ certainly cannot be and shouldn’t be. Above all, Tolkien seems to me to have a profound and positive moral aim, to warn against the worship of power.

Martin does this negatively. Is it intentional? I am not sure. By showing what people do when they are fighting for power, the lies they tell, the mercy they fail to show, the surprises they arrange; by showing that those characters we like most are often not very good at this, whereas the hateful succeed –and by describing the exercise of power and its consequences, he builds up an indictment of power as strong as any I have ever seen.

And by trying to describe a society which prays, and has a religious hierarchy, scriptures and beliefs – but is definitely not Christian – he makes the thoughtful reader wonder if this is a picture of a world that was never saved, and perhaps never will be. If this is so, then I think it is a) frightening and b) instructive.

I often wish I possessed superpowers, which might allow me to help the people who write to me to recount the horrible things that can so easily happen to you at the hands of authority in modern Britain.

Well, I don’t. But perhaps I am developing them. I was crossing the road on foot at a pelican crossing, protected by a red light, when I saw a cyclist, kitted out for the Tour de France, approaching at speed and plainly not planning to stop. I glared at him from a range of about 20 feet. To my amazement, he immediately toppled over on to his side, hitting the road amid the crunch and tinkle of damaged accessories. I was laughing so much, I had to turn away.

By the time I was able to look back, he was up and moving again, fast enough to catch up with me and call me a rude name. I replied that I hadn’t actually done anything to him and that, while he might be right about how horrible I am, people who ride through pedestrian crossings are even worse.

Evildoers beware.
I might be nearby.

Corbyn still has backing of the Labour party, JUST.
>In a hypothetical head-to-head matchup between him and Angela Eagle, he currently holds a 10 point lead at 50% to 40%, with 5% saying they would not vote and 7% saying they don’t know. In other head-to-heads Corbyn does better, currently ahead of Tom Watson by 11 points and Dan Jarvis by 17 points.

She was relieved to hear another person say that as she voted leave and all she'd been hearing is doom and gloom from remainers, who were also surprised that she voted leave since she was black.

She said these liberals often come across more racist than actual racists because of their profiling and pigeonholing. Shit was refreshing to hear.

"Prepare for surprises. If I were the EU leadership (and we must assume they are intelligent and cunning), I would begin with a ‘hard cop’ routine, of aloof resentment, with hints of menace. Then, when enough silly panic had been spread in Britain (this is what the Bad Losers’ Alliance – which has now replaced the Remain Campaign - are now working on, very hard) they can come up with a new offer, which at the very least keeps us in the single market and requires a large contribution from us, and at the very most requires either a new referendum or the endorsement of the public in a snap election."

He would be crashing the Labour party if he actually did resign. Corbyn is very popular with the public at the moment, the Blairites trying to ruin him is actually backfiring since they've seen 60k more people become members of the party in the last couple of weeks.

If Corbyn resigns then the Labour party is finished. Completely resigned to becoming Conservatives Mk2 once and for all and they will never win an election in the autumn or thereafter.

So both May and Osborne have confirmed the next Tory government will no longer aim for a budget surplus by 2020.

Has Michael Gove shared his opinion on this? The consensus in the party seems to be the economy hit will be so hard we will go full zimbabwe mode with endless stimulus packages, low interest rates and more spending.

Is there really no way of avoiding a deficit? Why are they trying to ruin the treasury, is it some kind of punishment on the country for voting Leave?

Some people will always vote Labour, but I'm saying if Corbyn is out they are going to lose a massive amount of voters, especially with the youth too.

I'm convinced that's part of why Corbyn is under so much pressure now, because it basically became an open secret that he dislikes the EU and was only saying he was for remain in order to appease the younger 'liberal' voters. Blarites have never liked Corbyn but it feels like the referendum was the tipping point.

The idea that some people are saying Corbyn is 'Unelectable' yet favour Angela Eagle being the leader speaks volumes.

I know you guys claim economics don't matter and what really matters is sovereignty and national pride or whatever... but boy the EU is going to shaft us hard.

Denying us trade deals, and it looks like they are going to start offering incentives to companies based in the UK, or multinationals who have their european HQs in the UK to move to other EU nations.

I'm pretty sure once we have trade deals on the card again, the UK's economy will be gutted with a third of our current GDP, and thats if we're lucky.

I mean obviously the next stage would be cultural terrorism, european TV networks stop running UK sports, UK films and TV programs, a whole bunch of historical dramas start creeping out that depict the UK as the menacing bad guys.

As much as i love my country, it feel the most sensible option is to bail because we are going to get gutted.

you need to pay attention to what's going on in the us. the constitution there has never stopped rights from being attacked by politicians. it's taken decades for gun rights restrictions to be challenged in the courts. it's a constant shitfest, especially when you get a president like obama who thinks he can change the constittution through executive directives, and the senate and congress sit on their hands, and an increasing faction of the judiciary who think the constitution is out-dated. a single constitutional document (literally the only difference between the uk and us constitutions) is not a magic bullet.

There's still a LOT of places the government could make cuts though. Starting with foreign aid. Also housing benefits to non-citizens, JSA for lazy fucks etc.

Osborne didn't even try to bring the deficit down in any serious way.

There is no trade deal with the US right now.

Nevertheless, the UK is the largest source of foreign direct investment (FDI) in the United States. More than China, Germany, all of them.

Exactly, he was between a rock and a hard place and either way it was the only outcome. Going for leave publically would have been a risk tbqh.

They'll lose 60k of those members overnight if Comrade Corbyn is out and Eagle is in. It will be the end imo.

May (mummy) is in a good spot right now. She was a remainer, which will appease the remain half the country, but shes been very clear about Brexit going ahead due to the result (which will appease the other half who voted leave).

Shes politically clean unlike Gove who is now regarded as a backstabber, Johnson is out of the race.

There aren't any other big names really, so whilst nothing is certain May is a reasonable bet.

>Blarites have never liked Corbyn but it feels like the referendum was the tipping point.

The Blairites were looking for any excuse for months but the lacklustre support for Remain is really a red herring. His anti EU views are well known and other Leave voters on the right of the party such as Frank Field admit as much.

Corbyn's only real chance is to stick it out in a test of wills and hope the traitors are too scared to put themselves up against him in a vote of the rank and file which he has a good chance of winning. Some are also scared of Chilcott which might swing support back to Corbyn

Then they can all leave and form their own Blairite party

Who is Andrea Leadsom and why is the poll favouring her?

Of all the politicians on the list I am not fimiliar with her and Crabb. My personal choice goes out to Liam Fox since he has shown to have a good understanding of the foreign affairs and military needs of the UK. He opposed Cameron's stupid 0.7% of GDP to foreign aid and instead wanted it for the military so they could actually fix shit.

cool, you can hang around in sainsburys in the evening my town like all your countryfolk. there hardly seems to be anyone else in there after about 8.30pm

i guess they probably don't have any money to do anything else in the evenings, and a supermarket full of all the stuff you could ever possibly want is quite a novelty for people from poland

This all true however, the UK is not the USA and they are not the only model, there are many other examples of countries with constitutions. The one doubt I had about voting leave was trust in our own government. Now we don't have the euro oversight I would be much happier with some constraint on government power. Too many things here are revocable privileges, not inalienable rights.

Leadsom is v. good for a woman and completely uncucked. You'll realise when you hear her speak how good she is. She hasn't put a foot wrong imo but I don't think she's up to the job of leader.
>>
>>79432851
>Who is Andrea Leadsom and why is the poll favouring her?

The real answer (to both) is that she was a major figure in the EU Referendum debates, and performed very well (see: Youtube). Nobody here knew who she was before.

Fox would be good, but there's sadly no chance.
>>
>>79432702
Most amendments constitutions are just additions and not over-ridings.

An act of parliament isn't a natural right.
>>
>>79432851
I once poured drinks for Sir Nick Harvey MP (back when he *was* an MP) at a garden party about 5 years ago, just after the Coalition had started and Harvey was Armed Forces Minister under Fox who was Defence Sec. Harvey said in his speech Fox essentially turned to him and said "Deal with the Afghanistan shit, I'm not touching it".

I'm sure he has his reasons for standing but I think Fox's best chance has come and gone, not to mention he fucked that guy in the hotel room or rent or whatever he was swinging a few years back.
>>
>>79432961
i am not sure what your point is. the uk is arguably the constitutional model for the rest of the world, including the usa. the similarities between the bill of rights and the us constitution bill of rights isn't an accident mate. you seem to need to brush up on your history and the circumstances surrounding the war of independence and especially the phrase 'fundamental rights of the englishman'

>Too many things here are revocable privileges, not inalienable rights.

ok, you have no fucking idea what you're talking about with regards to the bill of rights. go and read something and stop wasting my time. i've actually told you what is what here but you apparently don't believe me so you need to go spend some time in a law library or on the parliamentary website or even, you know, just on the wiki. you have some misplaced understanding of parliamentary supremacy and how it relates to the natural rights of all british peoples.

the bill of rights never passed anything into law. it was an acknowledgement of fact. jurisiprudence in the common law regarding natural rights was settled centuries ago. your lack of understanding is your problem, not mine.

OK examples

Right of entry to the home. As Pitt put it:

'The poorest man may in his cottage bid defiance to all the forces of the Crown. It may be frail — its roof may shake — the wind may blow through it — the storm may enter — the rain may enter — but the King of England cannot enter — all his force dares not cross the threshold of the ruined tenement!'

And now? Huge list of people can force entry, even meter installers.

Freedom of the press: how close did the press regulation bill come?

Freedom of assembly: been to any strikes lately?
