The reunification was a mistake. It killed off even the last shreds of national pride by introducing an additional tax to rebuild the East - which obviously led to open resentment, and once you already hate the other side of Germany hating all of it is not that far away anymore.
Apart from that, the current union is also not doing NRW, Bremen, Berlin and so on any good. They can just ride on the success of the southern states and avoid facing their own fuckups almost indefinitely because someone else will pay the bill for it.
On top of that, you have the problem that Germany is too big for Europe. It will always lead to us being more influential than the rest which leads to our politicians believing they should get to say what is done in Europe. The other nations would actually have to agree on something for once to keep Germany in check and I think everyone knows how likely that is to happen.
