Yep. The term is "euphemism treadmill". Anything that is at one point the politically correct term for a group will eventually become a derogatory term. The words "imbecile" and "moron" were once the correct terms to describe a mentally retarded person.
Same reason why "midget", "dwarf", and "little person" have all previously been the correct term for a person who is unusually short. Look at literally any racial group and you'll see the same trend.
