Yeah, but when you've surrounded yourself with people who hang on your every word and constantly give you affirmation of your opinions, no matter how intelligent you are, it's likely easy to fall into without realizing it.
Since then, the criticisms of the cult-like behavior has been so widespread that he may have had no choice but to come to that realization. It's just from my ass though, so you could be right. His wife got into legal trouble, so I'm sure that also plays a role in him disassociating with it now.
