is this what's currently happening in north aleppo?

It's mostly empty desert, i wonder if they can hold it. They need to wipe out handarat camp and/or hraytan in the west and aleppo is sealed up.

Yop thats about right

Handarat camp seems to have been very difficult to attack. Maybe surrounding it and creating a western advance can finally crack it

Don't worry m8, Palmyra won't fall to ISIS again. The bad thing is that an operation to lift the siege on Deir Ezzor is off the table for the moment, but some hezbollah reinforcements were sent there last week, that's why ISIS hasn't try anything there since last week.

Also who would have expected that if you send 30 launchers and 500 rockets to the kurds in syria they might end up in other kurdish militias? Totally unexpected. Just like those TOWs that made it to islamists...

Have a video of Merkel proudly announcing that kurds name their children after the rocket system because they are so thankful for it.

That's not something new though.

I have been to Turkish military museum and they have a section dedicated to captured weapons of PKK.

They have plenty of NATO equipment. Belgium, Germany, Greece and Italy has supplied them with weapons.

But when Turkey provides weapons to others, these countries cry foul.
>>
>>78806322
Actually Turks themselves have license to make MILANs afaik. But I'm sure they will find a way to make Germany take another 10 million turks there no matter where those missiles came from.

There are three possible sources

1. Corrupted Peshmerga officials provided MILANs to PKK
2. YPG captured them from Syrian military or ISIS and provided them to PKK...

>>
>>78806586
No, Turkey had a license to build ERYX ATGM...

ERYX hasn't been seen in Syria though.
>>
>>78806722
The Syrian Military or ISIS don't have MILAN systems. Also the YPG wouldn't need to steal them, we send 30 Launchers and 500 rockets to them last year. Also a few hundred machine guns, small arms and tons of ammunition.
>>
>>78806823
Just checked and it appears you use them and do have the license to build them: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MILAN#Current_operators
>>
>>78806857

SAA definetly has Milans.
>>
>>78806783
Is it only me or is ISIS only putting effort against the rebels and government troops but not against the Kurds? The kurds have been advancing non stop and there was never a counter offensive by ISIS.
>>
>>78807078
yeah, forgot about that. Still the kurds have no reason to steal them, they already have a shit ton of them.
>>
>>78806728

This gives another reason to Turkey for hitting YPG

Also somehow I hope they sabotage these German planes in Incirlik.

A German pilot going down in Syria and getting captured would be fun.
>>
>>78807187
What about the whole Kobane thing?
>>
>>78807187
seems true..
ISIS counterattacked retaking al-Rai from the Azaz rebels
ISIS heavily attacking east/central Homs and the Tabqah pushback

Only half-decent counterattack ISIS did to the Kurds was northwest of Manbij on June 15, I think, and that was over within a day

>>78807574
He means lately, I think
>>
>>78807574
Yeah, I mean after that. It's like Kobane was the ultimate defeat for ISIS and they accepeted they can't win against the Kurds.

The Kurds are in a pretty tight spot in Sheikh Maqsoud, theyre constantly attacked

Also if anything, the Kurds in Sheikh Maqsoud might be the most trustworthy of all Kurds in Syria because (I would think) they dont have territorial ambitions, theyre just defending the neighbourhood where they already lived

Im sure they would highly appreciate the pressure being taken off their areas if SAA were to close the Castello road gap.

Whether they will remember that appreciation for long or start chimping out immediately after, is a good question though
>>

Not really m8,

Most of the time the hezbollah fighters are the best trained of the bunch. What you see alot is groups of afghans or iraqi militias being led by one or two lebanese hezbollah fighters. The goes the same with most SAA or NDF units.

Back in the day the hezbollah would do the brunt of the fighting in places like zabadani or ghouta, but as of late their experience and training are more valueable, leading to what i experience in the first bit of this post.

They already tried the offensive and it failed. the tabqa push got all the attention but at the same time the SAA was pushing from palmyra to Arak and the T3 airbase. They capped them both briefly and now are on the retreat aswell; that was the whole offensive. It just got less attention cause of the Tabqa dissaster.

They know that going through open dessert without RUAF airsupport is suicide, but the Ruaf is to busy protection the urban fronts in syria and keeping encircled rebels (ghouta, darayya, aleppo) suppressed. If the SAA would be able to clear these pockets (Jobar, Ghouta, Darayya, Homs) then pushing Deir Ezzor from Palmyra would be an option. At the same time an offensive towards tabqa would have to be launched. For this to work IS needs to be cleared from North Aleppo (what the SDF and FSA are doing right now). I would even go as far as suggesting the SAA should go for Al-Bab and Deir Asafir first before attempting tabqa & deir ezzor again.

The problems is the islamists are on thre offensive in aleppo and they need to be taken care of first.

The kurds are basically the new FSA.
So much NATO firepower behind him its obvious the goal isn't to help the kurds defend themselves.
They are racing the SAA to capture ISIS territory, this is why the SAA scrambled a rushed offensive on Tabqa out of nowhere. The kurds are a replacment proxy to the ghost FSA.

Guys, I have a couple of questions about Syria. If you guys could provide links and evidence along with the answers, it would be great. I have stopped following the developments of the Syrian civil war quite some time ago, and some friends of mine have started discussing the issue, and I want to refresh my memory and update my knowledge about the subject.

Before shit hit the fan, was Assad a good or bad president? Was he considered a dictator by its people?

Is it correct to say "before the civil war, Syria was the second most democratic country in the Middle-East, just behind Israel"? If you don't think Israel is a democracy, ignore it, that's not the point. I want to know whether or not Syria was the most stable country in the region, and whether or not it followed the ideals of Western democracies.

Is it true that Syria had an Alawite majority, and are the Alawites the most moderate sect of Islam in the world?

Did Assad really use chemical weapons against civilians? I remember there was a paper about a study of the rockets used in the chemical attacks and they concluded that they could not have been fired from areas controlled by the Syrian Army because the rockets had a very small range. I couldn't find this paper. Do any of you have it?

Is the FSA an ally of ISIS? Or are they working together to remove Assad from power out of temporary convenience? I remember seeing an interview with a high-ranking FSA dude and he claimed he was working with ISIS, but I have also seen intense firefights between FSA and ISIS.

Has the US sent weapons to the FSA to help them? If yes, do they really end up in ISIS hands? If yes, is it because of an alliance between the two or is it because ISIS simply steals/takes them?

Assad was considered as stable and steadily reforming and progressive as a president, Syria never had any conflicts under his rule. He is a dictator but a benevolent one, one needed to rule an arab country that is a couple generations behind the west so democracy is incompatible.

Syria did not follow the western ideals of democracy, read above point.

Syria has an alawite minority, they hide their religion due to a history of oppression by the sunnis and ottomans. They are very secular but still religious (they fast in ramadan and read quran).

You answered your own question, there were no gains for Assad to use chemical weapons, especially because he invited the UN to inspect a chemical incident in Khan Al Assal.

ISIS' existence stems from the FSA. Up until the capture of Mosul they were under the same umbrella of the FSA and worked together. (FSA is a term given to the numerous groups operating together, they are islamist jihadists at this point.)

The FSA had heaps of support from the US and the west, although the US played a more logistical role, facilitating the weapons it procured from Turkey and Saudi Arabia as well as providing TOW missiles and training and aid which is now seen in ISIS' arsenal. It is not because ISIS' steals from them, but because ISIS is a splinter of the FSA at this point. They used to work in union but ISIS' rampage in Iraq garnered enough power and support that they believed that they should conquer the FSA as well.

>Before shit hit the fan, was Assad a good or bad president?
Well, he got shit done. Services were improving, infrastructure wasnt so terrible compared to some in the region, GDP was going well, he was making new alliances. Id say he seems to have been alright. Other people couldve done what he did though, I guess.

>and whether or not it followed the ideals of Western democracies.
Well that it did not. Syria wasnt and isnt a democracy in the western sense at all
Still the Syrian gov heavily screens for example the potential presidential election candidates and many arent allowed to run
Improvements were made though, like the multi-party system - Syrian parliament now has an opposition coalition and many independents.

Logically the West should be thinking that these baby-steps to more democracy are a good start, however for geopolitical reasons many still insist removing Assad would solve all problems (as if Al Qaeda and friends are so democratic)

No matter how undemocratic (from our perspective) the Syrian elections are, they do serve one purpose: given that they were recently monitired by dozens of countries, and many voted in embassies abroad, it gives one the ability to see that many Syrians still support Assad. Because people who hate Assad would either abstain from voting or vote ANY other candidate.. but most didnt.

>the Alawites the most moderate sect of Islam in the world?
This might be true. Which other muslims drink wine and so few wear headscarves?

>Is the FSA an ally of ISIS?
No, they clash regularily indeed. They used to be allies though, some years ago.

>Has the US sent weapons to the FSA to help them? If yes, do they really end up in ISIS hands? If yes, is it because of an alliance between the two or is it because ISIS simply steals/takes them?
Yes. Sometimes. They take them when a FSA area gets overrun.

i'll answer to what i think i know.

>Is it true that Syria had an Alawite majority
No, alawites have always been a quite small minority. Syria has had a sunni majority for a long time.

>and are the Alawites the most moderate sect of Islam in the world?
As i understand it they are quite moderate but there are other sects with quite liberal understandings of islam. The Ibadis that make up most of Omans population for example. The country is called the arab version of swiss for a reason.

>Did Assad really use chemical weapons against civilians?
Highly unlikely, he had absolutely no reason to do so, especially not since there were the whole UN control groups in the country at that time. Also Assad/the syrian military had a shit ton of professional chemical weapons, they could have leveled whole districst if they wanted. What was used were ghetto modded propane barrels filled with sarin strapped to segments of GRAD rocket motors, why build something like that if you have real chemical weapons munitions in storage? And why trigger a "red line" if you can achieve the goals without using weapons despised by the whole world?

You probably mean this pdf here:
https://www.voltairenet.org/IMG/pdf/possible-implications-of-bad-intelligence.pdf

There are at least two others that talk about this topic i know about, one explains the political circumstances (chemical weapons=red line, chemical weapons used, who might've used them, how russia defused the situation) quite well, the other one is like the one i posted and analyzes the weapons and weapon systems used.

What should also be remembered when you talk about chemical weapons in syria: The UN investigation couldn't proof who used them, but Carla del Ponte and other members of the investigation team strongly suggested that most evidence points towards the rebels.

>Is the FSA an ally of ISIS?
The FSA is not one uniform block. It's made up of many fractions that range from scum like Jaish al Islam and Ahrar ar Sham that openly ally with scum like jabhat al nusra to more moderate fractions. After years of civil war there is not much left of the moderate fractions, the bulk of the FSA is made up by radicals now. In many areas they share their territory with jabhat al nusra (even in the biggest "moderate" rebel strongholds, even warren announced a month or so ago that the ceasefire in aleppo is unstable because there is a high presence of al nusra there). They didn't ally with ISIS for a long time, they only have ceasefires in some areas. Some months ago they attacked the aleppo supply line in khanasser at the sime time though, that probably indicates that some sort of cooperation took place.

Dude, just look at videos and pics from government controlled areas/cities and """"""moderate"""""""" controlled cities, you'll see why almost every honest people support the legimitate government of Syria.
I'm on my wife's pc so I don't have access to my /sg/ folder where I have all kind of evidence about this.

>Well that it did not. Syria wasnt and isnt a democracy in the western sense at all
But were they the most democratic country in the Middle-East? Is this a true statement or are there other countries that are closer to Western democracies? I've heard Turkey is shit.

>it gives one the ability to see that many Syrians still support Assad
Can I get some exact data on this?

Where can I find information about their actual chemical arsenal? I know using them is a war crime, but wouldn't having them in first place be a war crime too?

Sometimes I wonder how many defections were genuine

https://www.rt.com/news/syria-ambassador-qatar-defection-421/

Ive also read an article that said for example al-Jazeera greatly exaggerated the amount of defections (see also the al-Jazeera&Google project to "map defections to encourage the opposition", clearly they WANTED more defections, see https://www.rt.com/op-edge/337269-clinton-google-aljazeera-assad-plot/ & Google for other sources)

>Can I get some exact data on this?
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Syrian_presidential_election,_2014

Most critics focused on the fact that the elections were held amidst a war going on. Which is kinda funny, if there WOULDNT be elections they would bitch too, Im sure.

The fact that there was only one other candidate while many more people applied, is where you can see the Ba'ath party being retardedly selective and there you see that Syria is no true democracy. However the point stands: this election DOES prove that is supported in the areas that could vote (which are the vast majority of the Syrian population)

Once again: Western politicians are retarded for encouraging allies of Al Qaeda over babysteps (but steps nonetheless) towards more democracy by a non-radical government

>Where can I find information about their actual chemical arsenal?
I doubt you can find it anywhere, this isn't exactly open to the public. Like any other nation with chemical weapons they had specialized and professional warheads and means to deliver them though.
>but wouldn't having them in first place be a war crime too?

No, you're allowed to have them. There is the CWC treaty, but most countries don't give a shit even though they signed and it's not enforcable. Meaning syria was allowed to have chemical weapons, but not to use them. As you probably know their stockpile got destroyed by the russians after the incidents with chemical weapon attacks in syria.

>Would you say the FSA and ISIS are not that different from each other
As is said, FSA is not an homogenous block. There are fractions in there that are not far away from ISIS in terms of their ideology, some others are quite moderate. Yes, some of the fractions cooperate with ISIS to some extend, but since ISIS got so toxic nobody does that openly anymore.

Sectarian...sects... are Sunni, Shia, Alawite

Many Sunni support Assad
Practically no Shia or Alawite support radicals

The opposition is clearly sectarian whereas the government isnt.
When did Assad ever speak badly of Sunnis in general?
Whereas figures like Zahran Alloush clearly advocated "cleansing Damascus of Alawites and Shiites"

Or this FSA commander who defected in 2011:
>Riad al-Asaad has made controversial statements such as suggesting that ethnic cleansing and suicide bombing are "an integral part of revolutionary action, of Free Syrian Army action."

>Can you really just take a missile and swap its explosive warhead with a chemical one?
If it's designed that way, yes, obviously. Many weapon platforms are modular so that you can use the means of delivery (like a cruise missile, normal unguided short range missile, SRBM, you get it) with differen warheads for multiple scenarios.

>Where can I find definite proof of their destruction?
Nowhere since stuff like this is classified. The US apparently supervised it. They had no problem with it, so there's no reason for us to doubt that the stockpile is destroyed.

Anyways, should Assad use chemical weapons he'd get fucked by NATO quite quick, and russia would drop them too. That's just one of the things that doesn't fly, especially for smaller countries with no means to defend themself except being under the protective umbrella of a superpower.

You dont even want them to become a tourists in your country. Why the fuck should i trust you want best choice for Syria. No fucking way. You are basically supporting Assad because he is killing much more Syrian than other sides of the civil war. This is why you are supporting Assad. I just thought you needed more complex adaptations to a normal missile to make it capable of delivering a chemical.

Like you can't just take a inter-continental nuke missile, remove the nuke at the top and place a manned space capsule. You need to add several other things to the rocket to take these people into space.

>The Houthi forces, backed by the Yemeni Republican Guard and Saleh units, reportedly captured Brigade 35 Base in the Ta’iz Governorate on Sunday after a grueling week long battle with the Hadi loyalists and Saudi-led Coalition.

>Also known as the “Al-Qasr Camp,” Brigade 35 is located in the southern district of Tai’iz City; it has long been under the control of the Saudi-led Coalition and their allies.

>Brigade 35’s location in Ta’iz makes it an imperative military endeavor for the Houthi forces and Yemen Republican Guard because it opens up the southern district inside the provincial capital.
