Hot, humid, friendly people and loads of awesome food. There's actually quite a wide variety of food to be found around here. They probably brought out the traditional stuff more than usual if you were visiting though. You can get spicy in just about anything found here so you'll love that part.
New Orleans is unfortunately a mixed bag these days on account of the crime problem. People have gotten mugged in the French Quarter in the middle of the day even. The official statistics under report it due to police miscategorizing stuff. Don't get me wrong I love that city. I mostly avoid going there these days and can't recommend it to outsiders for that reason though.
There are some nice places around the city that don't have the crime problem. I live in one of them. It's defiantly similar here but not quite the same.
