People are choosing these new "identities", such as "trans", "pansexualism", "queer", etc because of the need to belong.
This wasn't really a problem until recently. Why? Because Western society used to have a fucking culture that told you right where you belonged... in that culture. Germans identified as Germans, Brits as Brits, and Spaniards as Spaniards...
With the degeneration of society, however, the cultural fiber slipped apart. Religion, Christianity in particular, played a huge part in the culture of the West, whether or not you accept that God is real. Religion is the backbone of Western culture - not all cultures, but definitely Western culture (or at least, what Western culture once was).
Now that that's all gone, people have to find a new "identity" (culture) to grasp onto, whether that's as a pansexual feminist or whatever... the new "religious" backbone to all of this is easily identified "leftism", or maybe "multiculturalism", or maybe even "cultural marxism".
There's more to it than that, but think about it... the puzzle pieces all fit together. New identities are being created because the West lacks an actual culture to latch onto. This is because we've been taught Western culture (what is actually the BEST culture on Earth) is actually bad. This also ties into why new immigrants are no longer assimilating into the West properly.
That basically sums it up.

NYC is a huge admixture of cultures, meaning one's "cultural identity" is of relatively little importance since everyone is so desensitized to the cultures of NYC. This is especially true in the larger cultural groups or those that don't identify strongly with a given culture, meaning that they have to do that much more to find an identity and stand out against the cultural diversity. Sure some of those cultures are loud and eccentric, but this doesn't mean much.
Omaha is hugely homogeneous in ethnic and therefore cultural makeup. Everyone knows what culture they belong to. There is no need to stand out from the huge mixture of different cultures. There is no competing against other cultures. Thus, they're tied together by their culture without a need to find a new identity and can instead live up to their cultural expectations.

Yes Russia's current culture is a reflect of economic conditions, but that doesn't mean that things can't be turned around towards your old traditions. It would take work and government, most likely, but it'd be worth it.
