I find communism/socialism appealing only because of automation. The fact that robots will replace 99% of today's jobs makes collective ownership the only logical path.

It doesn't work. If you take a group of one hundred people and get them all to agree to give up private ownership, and if you actually get them all to agree to it, you'll achieve actual, working communism. Above that number, nobody gives a fuck about each other. Try it at a society of around fifty million people the oligarchs whose wealth you want to redistribute will want nothing to do with it.
Thus begins the first stage of any communist country: the "revolution". To redistribute the wealth, a large government is formed and an army begins to seize the wealth. Only the wealth is not there anymore because the Oligarchs have fucked off, leaving you with a country that is around 50% poorer than it was before and fifty million people who are eagerly waiting for the wealth they were promised.
So everyone's quality of life suffers, you have to introduce more government and more army to stop people from revolting and trying to get things back to how they were before, and the second stage of communism, the "classless, stateless" wonderland, never happens. Instead you get a totalitarian, Stalinist shithole with millions of people fleeing to places like America where, while they may be the lowest of the low, they actually have the chance to gain an education, an employment and get a better quality of life.
tl;dr, Communism inevitably leads to 1984.

We live in a world where everything can be called socialist. This makes it incredibly easy to throw critiques at communism and Marxism in general, all you have to do is call out any vaguely leftist ideology or party. Liberals are called socialist, nazis are called socialist and even democrats are called socialist. Most so called leftists caved into mixed-economy and capitalism. We have no unity.
I think we need to reclaim our identity, think and learn from our mistakes. Now I'm no anti-revisionist, but we need to also take a hard look at ourselves and see how far we have detracted from Marxism. Americans continue to fetishize democracy and consumerism. We cave in too readily and lack the unity other ideologies have.
What I think needs to happen here in America is that we need create small scale communist/labor/socialist parties (whatever works for the individual communities) to enact true socialist polices and create more cohesive communities. The reason I think this is ideal is:
