When we were looking to replace the F-111's in our airforce, we had a big war game to show off the replacement F-18's.
They were to simulate an attack on an airbase in the north of WA, while the F-111's defended the base.
The F-111's have a vastly larger fuel tank than the F-18's. They stood off at extreme range taunting the F-18s every time they tried to attack until they ran out of fuel and had to go back to the carrier. The F-111's followed them in and "killed" the carrier.
We still bought the planes, but it was a huge embarrassment.
This has been a huge flaw in the US apparent air superiority for decades.
The fact that the Russians are exploiting it now is hilarious.
