I speak German, it's useful, if you go to Germany, Austria, Switzerland or the border areas where most people speak 2 or more languages. (But most young people speak English) However it's not that useful unless you get a business job or a teaching job, it is also a hard language, for the US, Spanish is probably the best bet when talking usefulness and employers would probably like that.

Russian is not a language you will become fluent in without total immersion because our Grammar is VERY complex. Unless you intent to spend some time here speaking it, it will really be pointless.

English is well spoken by most people on Germany, Austria, Netherlands, Nordic nations, Switzerland, Africa, South Asia, Oceania, Caribbean, Greece, British Is., Canada, USA & by Jews. Another language is redundant in these countries.

Many Asians are very disciplined & smart as Germans. But there is a striking diference on morality:

[2] Japan forgive USA, and is now a great ally of USA and EU. China and Korea would nuke USA if given a chance.

Southeast Asian languages as Vietnamese, Thai and Malay may be important in future (only if they develop enough).

Think of it this way.
Learn both, but start Russian much sooner.
German is heavily modified English with older grammar and pronunciation. You can get competent in a couple of months.
Russian uses a completely different writing system, its grammar requires total agreement (nouns and adjectives must match in gender, number and case), it shares few cognates with English (German has quite a few but still has faux amis like gift), it has unfamiliar sounds like "shch" and it relies on grammar rather than syntax to clarify action. You cannot eavesdrop or walk into a Russian conversation, until you are somewhat far into things, like you will be able to early on in German.
English almost replaces grammar with vocabulary and syntax, as does Chinese, so word order is very rigid. Reverse word order and you reverse action. German has a little grammar and so their word order is a little more flexible. Russian does not have any rules for word order -- there are preferences, but a poet is free to arrange his words however he wants, and not in the sense of poetic license; so is a conversationalist.

German is a fine mix between English and Russian as far as basic concepts go.
Russian allows you to change words, it's more descriptive, more fluid. As a bonus, you can enjoy some great pieces of cinematography and literature. You can speak russian in a buch of other countries too.
