Because the contradictions inherent in capitalism is squeezing the middle class dry and pauperizing the working class. It means profit for the few on the backs of the many. The next few decades will be characterized by falling rates of profit because their won't remain any more sectors to open up to private corporations for exploitation (already health, education, banking and the housing sector has been opened up). Globalization has people anxious about their communal and cultural identity.
It is amazing to see the rise of Trump and Sanders over other mainstream politicians. Both of them represent the popular anxiety. Both of their rhetoric is around 'fixing' the economy, getting jobs back.. in general, resisting the inevitable development of the global capitalist system. Well since I was born in a communist country .. I liked the sense of unity and purpose and work for the greater good. At least while I was a kid and was stupid.
Also amazing uplifting songs. Say what you want about communists but they got some kick ass tunes.
Also I find it idiotic that in this day and age with this technology we have we still have hungry and homeless people. I liked that (in theory) people worked for the community not just themselves. Money was irrelevant the sense of community was great... but then the human condition kicks in and you realize that you just cant have that kind of a world and still do what humans do. You need to give up a lot of things and many are not ready or willing to do so ...
But now that I am older I believe that the western values of individualism are, for better or worse, superior. Not the extreme versions of ME ME ME AND ONLY ME and the idiotic gender/sex bullshit but ... not all men are the same. And sadly the realization came that most people are no better than cattle.

Product of its time. Developing countries in the early 20th century felt cucked by developed countries so they turned to an alternative, seemingly rising alternative. The system was created by academics and the target was the poor and stupid. As a result, the surrounding propaganda promotes a simplistic, childlike view of the world based on a juvenile sense of fairness and an Us vs Them mentality.
The bigger question is why does it STILL appeal to people after it demonstrably failed. The reason is because the narrative still appeals to children. Communism was always a shitty system, but its propaganda was simply the finest ever made.
