Original English, or Old English as it is called, was very simple and basic, and it wasn't until the Norsemen, Romans, and Normans came along in addition to the grammar rules and structure developed to become Middle English, did English become a truly dynamic language capable of creating a virtually infinite amount of words over time.
I'd really like to read more about this subject, I think historical linguistics is a fascinating field of study.
