Bush was an incumbent president, that means the party was united behind him.
For example, right now it seems like Trump is getting about 87% of the registered republican vote, imagine this going up by 5% and how much this would help.
Lastly, like it or not 4-8 years is long enough for immigration/internal migration and birthrates to increase Hispanics/Muslims/minorities by a few % as well.
That's why this might be the last Republican chance. or perhaps the elections in 8 or 12 will be. But it's definitely coming. Electorally the US is on the brink. if the immigration is not stopped they will be lost for sure.

The Democrats, meanwhile, have transformed into an identity politics party, which is utterly bizarre. They no longer have any core messaging that is anything but pandering to skin color, sexual orientation, and vaginahaving.
