This used to be observable through news.google.com, where, if you were careful, you could see the "echo chamber" effect of a news story being picked up and slightly re-edited over and over. Google initially did not suppress these results, so with a careful search of keywords from the story (but not from the headline) you would easily find dozens of news outlets regurgitating the same press release. Unless you knew to look for the fine print, it typically would show up with the minor edit, perhaps a changing of a word or two, or the removal of a few sentences. But the gist was there. After awhile you could see that the only free press happened to be fringe or "indie" press, because they were the only ones not picking up AP or Bloomberg and re-feeding it.
Because most fringe and indie press tends to also have a low signal-to-noise ratio, you have to sift through them, discarding what appears to be political hit pieces, recurring arguments that you've already heard, etc. Zero Hedge is a great example, 70% (my guestimate) of the aritcles are craptacular but the remaining 30% have nuggets that you want.
