They know Hillary or even Bernie will win the general if they roll out ANY candidate besides Trump or Cruz. They would effectively kill their own party...their own reason for existence and income.

They will not go for Cruz. Cruz is legit insane in his policies and they know it. They might go for him if he has more delegates than Trump, but that seems unlikely.
3)
Trump is known for making deals. The GOP knows that. There will be a backroom meeting with Trump. Trump will have to make concessions about a few issues I think, but in the end he will get the support of the GOP. The republicans will thus avoid internal conflict, voter alienation and send the strongest possible candidate into the presidential race.

Backroom dealing means they can offer bribes and shit to any and every delegate. The backroom meetings with Trump won't be them conceding an inch. They're not used to it, and they will refuse to do it. 1. With Trump as the nominee, Democrats will have a very easy time associating literally all Republican candidates in every race in the country with Trump. All Latino votes go Democrat, all female votes go Democrat, all Black votes go Democrat, all Muslim votes go Democrat ect. Republicans will have the support of white men... and no one else. This is basically the opposite of what they have been trying to shift towards since they lose to Obama and would be a total setback for the party.
2. With Trump as the nominee, they'll have demonstrated a total loss of control of their own party. They already took a big hit in confidence when they failed to nominate any of their preferred candidates, so the last thing they need is to show that not only are they failures but they are also submissive bitches that cater to the whims of a stronger man. Donors will take their money elsewhere, because at that point its clear that the GOP is a bad investment.
3. All of those Republican politicians that hate Trump and have vowed to oppose Trump are going to find themselves without support from their own party. While the left attacks them for being part of Trump's party, the right will attack them for not supporting the nominee. They'll struggle to find support anywhere and the ones up for reelection will lose.
Essentially, what could happen is Trump is able to win the presidency... and then get saddled with a Democratic House and Congress and unable to do anything. That means no wall, no muslim ban, nothing. The GOP would rather try their luck again next time than have a lame duck president and lose everything else.
That's assuming, of course, Trump can win the presidency. He can't. He is the single most disliked candidate in history on all sides of the isle. People will come out in droves just for the chance to vote against him.
