The USSR a honorable attempt, but it failed. And in many ways Stalin was the Bonaparte of the revolution, and they failed with their goal of Socialism and later Communism.
What it did however, was to industrialize a massive country with harsh conditions, ending hunger (after the collectivization was finished and the technology had caught up with the times).
The life expectancy rose with up to 25 years, people got education and proper health care. Housing. Sure, bad things happened. Bad things happened in all countries during their early days of industrialization.
But while the West used 70-100 years, the USSR used 10 years. Instead of the workers suffering for 70-100 years under extreme conditions, they suffered for 10 years.
Soviet Communism defeated Nazism. Adolf Hitler had promised the enslavement of the Slavic people. When they invaded, they went from village to village executing old people, women and children. Hadn't they industrialized at the massive speed they did, they would have lost. The Slavic nations enslaved or eradicated.
