On one side of the family he was supposed to be a radar operator but that clearly didn't happen because when he got Alzheimer's her started talking about how heavy the flamethrower was and how much of a stink it made and the noise was horrible. Depends. My grandparents were born in '21 and '31 respectively.
The latter was used in the Volkssturm as part of the HJ in the last weeks of the war in southern Germany /northern Italy, although he saw no action. (Well, when their commander released them from duty, because he did not want to be responsible for the deaths of children, they were ambushed by GIs (?) once. One out of his group was wounded by a lung shot but survived.)
The older one was drafted in July '40 directly after his journeyman exam and fought till Oct '44 and was then in captivity until late '47.
Was in the Kriegsmarine and was sunk at least 2 or 3 times.
Sadly he died 20 years prior to my birth but from what I heard about him, both about his war time actions and his post war decisions, I greatly respect this man.

Well, he said he was an ordiance specialist and truck driver, or so he said. He had all his teeth knocked out from an artillery shell which threw him into a ditch, where he received frost bite during the battle of the bulge. Of course, this is merely what he said.
Turns out he was actually a platoon level sniper sent out to kill important targets like officers, arty spotters and counter sniping. We found this out when we were going through his stuff and we found a walther, an iron cross and a scrimshaw swastika, and a letter from the war department which talked about his citation. Turns out he was knocked from an artillery shell and into a ditch because he killed officer, so the NCO's decided to basically blast the forest he was in for safe measure.
He was discovered by airborne troops a day or two after the fact.

Was in the army, escaped to England in 1940, joined the FFF, fought in North Africa, and later France. His two brothers were killed during the war, one in action, the other executed after he helped the Resistance. His father volunteered to be taken as hostage after the Resistance attacked a convoy near the village he was the mayor of, and died in a concentration camp of typhus, I think like a week or two before the British and Canadians liberated the camp. He was a a WW1 veteran, was in the cuirassiers in the first few months of the first war, before they realised charging sword drawn on horseback against machine guns wasn't the best idea.
And the family estate was used to house German troops, who partially burned it down when retreating. Then it was used as shelter by colonial troops who apparently burned down whatever was left of it by lighting a fire directly on the wooden floor. I'm not even kidding.
The interesting thing is my family has pretty much always been involved in "far right" politics. They were staunch traditionalist monarchists until WW1, then were involved in fascists/proto-fascists veteran groups in the interwar period, were sympathetic to fascists parties and only to started to stay from it when they started getting pro-German. They hated Jews and communists, but they hated the Germans even more.
My grandpa's very old now, but he's still an awesome, funny guy. I try to go see him at least once a week, he's a bit lonely nowadays.

my grandfather was in the RCAF during WW2
flew in a Lancaster bomber doing night raids over europe. His plane got fucked up and caught fire and he had to bail out. His leg got busted but fortunately they had managed to get back over England(the pilot actually managed to land the flaming plane successfully funnily enough). He died when I was a little kid. I wish I'd had more time with him. My uncle still has all his medals.
He managed to get out of the war on the other side intact but for a bit of a limp and a touch of PTSD, but he did acquire one lifelong prejudice. My grandfather, more than anyone else in this world, hated the Dutch. He had respect for everyone else, on either side. The Germans were just fighting for their own country, the Belgians and the Polish went down swinging, and there were men of courage even among the French who weren't willing to roll over and accept defeat. But not among the Dutch.
He used to say that they just sat there like cows, oblivious, until the Allies came and they were rescued. That was the most important lesson he managed to teach me before he died: the Dutch are cowards.

Grandpa fought in Korea, wanted to fight in Nam but Grandma didn't want to move around a lot again. He became a family man and raised his 5 kids.
Papa, the man that raised my mom, was a Marine and fought in Nam. Got injured and had to pull out, got his Purple Heart. He'd later have two creole daughters with my Nana, their sons have Schwarzenegger-tier genetics.
