>It is a 'criminal' offense noto to have a TV license in the UK
>'criminal' offense

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-36259237

Holy fuck this country sucks. I have never paid for a TV license and I never intend to. They can suck my fat one.
>>
>>73784322
'He also said the BBC will be "required to give greater focus to under-served audiences, in particular those from black, Asian and ethnic minority backgrounds, and those in the nations and regions".'

Even more reason to switch off.
>>
>>73784322
It isn't if you don't watch live tv.

I'm fairly convinced nobody actually gets punished for it, also they have no right to come into your home so if they ask if you have a telly you can just lie or tell them to fuck off

At least it isn't part of your taxes like it is in Germany, everyone has to pay it there even if they don't have a telly.
>>
Why the fuck doesn't the UK just raise their taxes by .001% instead of going all fucking gestapo on their own citizens and turning into a police state over some fucking TV licenses?

That's how we pay for the government funded TV station (PBS) in the United States.
>>
How the fuck did such a retarded concept like a TV license become a thing over there?

How do they check if you don't have one?
How do they know if you still use TV regardless?

It's funny because you simultaneously think taxes are perfectly reasonable.
>>
>>73784571
It's funny because I live in a flat and my sister used to foot the bill before she left many years ago. But since then I have never had a reminder or red letter. Yet the flat below me gets bombarded with them. I fell off the map somehow which is lucky for me I guess. Even if CrAPITA did come around they would get no joy from me.

>>73784735
Because people have been brainwashed into believing they have 'choices' in the UK. Except you don't. If you watch Sky which is a subs based service you still have to pay the license fee because you are watching live TV even if it's not the BBC. It's a big scam for fat cats.
>>
>watching British TV

Found the problem.
>>
>>73784963
For 'essential' services yes. TV is a luxury. You should not be forced to pay for a luxury twice. You pay for cable/satellite services and other stations via advertising. None of which get a cut from the license fee. But because you pay for those/watch those you have to pay the 'BBC' license fee as a side effect upon 'criminal' prosecution and potential jail time if you don't.

You can even remove presumed right of access

http://www.bbctvlicence.com/Withholding%20implied%20right%20of%20access.htm

I think the BBC is good value for money to licence payers, I don' think the government of the day should be appointing board members.
>>
All they had to do was make BBC channels locked out unless you had a license. Not exactly hard to do. But they know people would then simply not pay and it would die. By forcing people to pay and frightening them with a criminal conviction they can keep creaming it in. Most of the UK public do not realize they can have a TV without having to pay a license fee just as long as they do not watch live broadcasts. You can play pre-recorded content as much as you like. BTW the BBC hid that particular small print way way in a dark place on their website.

Are they going to increase the license fee? I caught a several second glimpse of a segment on Andrew Neil's show which seemed to state that they were going to tie it with inflation, but I may have lacked context.

>How the fuck did such a retarded concept like a TV license become a thing over there?
Well when the TV first came around there was literally nothing to watch and you couldn't even get a signal. So they needed money to build the infrastructure and create some content to watch. So people where like ''ok, lets pool our money together so we can watch some TV'' and everyone was fine with it because TV back then wasn't as degenerate and crappy.

We have it in Sweden to, which is why i will never own a TV.

I just visited the tv licensing website, and it turns out that even if you don't need one, you have to inform them, so there's no way to legally avoid at least 'registering' with them.

I knew about the license, but just learned about this. What the fuck UK?

Is there any need to own a TV? I have a 'TV' hooked up to a PC in my livingroom. But I could just as well call it a large monitor.

I don't watch anything broadcast though I suppose the TV has the capability to pick up a signal ( never tried ).

Do you guys have to license monitors too? If not, then why get a TV when a PC w/monitor gets you the same functionality?
>>
>>73785898

You only need a license for live broadcast (including non-BBC channels). Even if it has a built in receiver as long as you don't have it connected to a aerial/dish you are exempt. They will continue to send you red letters though. Just use them as toilet paper. Never respond. If they ever come knocking close the door. Do not respond and don't leave your TV on show through the window. They will require a warrant to actually come in but if they do and you can prove the TV is detuned and disconnected from a aerial/dish you are safe.

I don't know but this is how it is in Sweden. Any of the following will work
>Get a friend with a licence to buy it for you
>Pay with cash and lie about your name
>Buy second hand from some random on the internet
>Find a dealer who doesn't give a fuck
>Get a license but then a few months later call in and cancel and tell them you sold it
Its not hard to get away from, lots of people don't pay it.

That's not a court issued warrant.
Even in the 0.1% chance they may have one, you can still refuse entry to them and then take them to court yourself to challenge the validty of said license.

Furthermore, to obtain a search warrant, TVL/BBC must offer the court positive evidence, such as seeing or hearing a television, or the householder's own admission - simply not being allowed to investigate is not just cause.
Learn the law if you want to comment on it

Why perpetuate this meme?
nobody will have read the link.
all they have done is added BBC iplayer to require the TV licence, nothing else has changed, I haven't had a TV licence for 7 years and still wont.
I am still against the idea of the TV licence as there is no excuse for the BBC to not go to a subscription service but until lazy fucking cucks in this country along with other tv channels get off their arses and change it people will continue to have to pay if they want to watch or record live TV with the exception of BBC iplayer which is dependent on being funded by the TV licence in return for a website with no advertisements for on demand streaming.

For the dopey fucks inventing what they think the TV licence is in their head, if you're going to pick fault with the TV licence (and there is much to do so) at least get your facts right.

You only need a TV licence if you want to watch or record live television (whatever is being broadcast right now), with the exception of BBC's website you do NOT need a TV licence to watch catch up programming or on demand.
There is no such a thing as a TV detector van, that was a cheap lie on the public, they can still by law call their van a TV detector van but I can call my car a ghost detector car, it doesn't mean it actually detects ghosts.
You just ignore any mail they send you, you are not required to answer their mail, the door or engage them in any way.
No they have absolutely no powers of entry.
Up to 1000 people a day stop paying their TV licence.
The TV licence company is called Capita.
There is no such a thing as an 'enforcement officer' beyond its title, it is just the salesmen in a fancy jacket, they have zero rights of entry.
You do NOT have to do anything, treat them as any other salesmen.
You are NOT required to give your details when buying a TV, if a store insists its the rules, walk away or give false details, they are being paid commission by Capita as a business deal.

>But OP's pic says...
Yes OP pic says what is legal in advertising laws, notice it neither states that those houses need a licence nor do they mention which houses.
>set up bakery
>door to door on Green street (10 houses)
>6 houses buy my bread. others dont want it.
>"there are 4 houses on Green street without my bread!"

>but there are people taken to court
yes, because they are idiots who don't pay a TV licence then get themselves a fucking Sky TV package or Virgin, or whomever company.
These companies also have business deals and share information with Capita then take a nice bit of commission for shopping people.

>I saw a youtube video of police with the TV licence people trying to get entry
No what you saw was the situation above OR somebody who has been taken to court and fined (based on the evidence above) and they have not been paying it, they are bailiffs and that is the case for anybody who doesn't pay court issued fines.

>I saw a video on youtube where a guy says...
yes you may see a very biased video on youtube, what you never saw was a video where a guy who didn't watch or record live television was being forced to allow somebody into their home, the usual suspects of these videos are 'freemen of the land' who mess about causing a lot of problems for themselves then record it for youtube to cry about infringement of freedom and all this nonsense.
I have never in 7 years spent more than 30 seconds on the doorstep with anybody who comes to my door.

One more tip, don't register that you don't need a TV licence, by doing so you are giving them permission (and it does make it clear) to allow an inspector to come to your home to check, you are also flagging up your name and address.
All I receive now is the odd "dear occupier" mass produced scare tactic junk mail which goes straight into the bin, once a year or so (once went 3 years with nobody at my door) you get the salesman who comes to the door, you simply close the door on them as any other salesman.

In Finland before the law changed, the way the govt would collect the TV-licence was to just send dudes at everyones doors.

What's interesting is that if you for some reason happened to not open the door, they never came back again the same year. My friends and me included used to just avoid opening it to them, but later on they just got frusturated as everyone did that, so they incorporated the payment in our taxes.

Fuck government news outlets. It's so painfully biased for lefties it's unbelievable. I suggest you search youtube for YleKioski and see for yourself. In all the short shows they have, all people happened to be dating foreigners and niggers, and famous finnish youtubers literally cry and tell how bad they feel for refugees.

Last time I bought a TV I didn't get asked anything about it. The property did get a tv lisence letter but the thing is you can go online and tuck a box that says "I only use my tv for vidya" and they stop bothering you.

It's only illegal if you have a TV. I don't ever plan to buy my own TV.
They're basically just like computers with a tenth of the features. Waste of fucking money.

You can just phone them and inform them you are withdrawing their implied right of access, then they can't do anything, they don't bother chasing you up anyway after that but even if they saw you watching tv through the window there is nothing they can do
