Our system will always be two-party because that's how it's set up. First past the post, no parliamentary system. Historically, the way we've justified this to ourselves is that we have "big tent" parties, that while we only have two at any given time, those two tend to include lots of factions that would be independent parties in parliamentary systems.
The problem with that is it's not really true anymore. The dominant factions in both parties have suffocated the lesser factions. The "conservatives" in the GOP have zero tolerance for nationalists, isolationists, populists, even the libertarians (look what they did to Ron Paul). So the "big tent" justification has withered.

American people that actually care about politics and it's environment are not willing to actually start change on their own like it would have happened decades or centuries ago.
