Overall, I think there is a lot of goodwill. People have a good feeling about Australians generally, but nobody really knows what's up down there beyond stereotypes.
One thing I have heard a few times, is that Australia is far more overtly racist than Canada or even the US. I suspect this is probably true. Some people are racist here too, but they usually don't air it out in public.

Every country on the planet is casually racist, Australia just doesn't bother to hide its casual racism and that's where the difference is.
