Not many people will likely die. But the complete destruction of Fort Mac could result in some major repercussions for Canada. The destruction of the country's primary oil producing centre, especially while the oil industry is hurting with the low prices. The destruction of the city *could* raise prices.
The handling of this situation by Trudeau and Notley (provincial premiere) could also deeply affect things. A tepid response by Trudeau would likely fuel A LOT of resentment from Alberta and probably bolster the slowly reemerging Western separatists. Especially if Trudeau tries to use this as an excuse to divest from oil and move towards green energy. It could severely undermine the West's economy.
Notley recently cut the wildfire fighting budget so this will probably hurt her in the polls (and she's already in third place). If she bungles the response bad enough she'll probably push together the two right-wing parties into a merger would would definitely seal her fate.
