The First Crusade was called to protect Byzantium from the Seljuks. However, by the time the Crusaders got to Byzantium they had already turned the tied of the war so the Crusaders beelined for Jerusalem. So actually the Crusade ended up being an aggressive war from the start.

Christianity has been far more brutal than Islam. Nothing in Europe survived except for Christianity. At least in the Middle East many of the religions of antiquity still survived until the modern era. There are still Yezidis, Zoroastrians, those polytheist religions from muhammad's time are still there. The middle east was still 20% Christian by the time of the Ottoman Empire. If Islam was antyhing like Catholicism then they would have all been wiped out because that's what European history was about from between the fall of West Rome until the end of the Thirty Years War.

I read a lot of history, European and Middle Eastern mostly so I keep a finger on the pulse.
With regards to Islamic Wars, the early ones actually were quite peaceful relative to the time. They didn't sack conquered cities or force conversions. Muslims camped away from conquered cities and the jizya was paid, a huge incentive not to go destroying towns or enforce conversions. It took 500 years for Persia to become majority Muslim. Anatolia didn't become Muslim until after the Ottomans took it, the Seljuks didn't convert people.
Persia wasn't so much conquered as the Sassanid government collapsed after their final battle with the Muslims (The Sassanid Empire was a confederacy and it broke apart after they lost a few major confrontations). The expansion of muslim terrorities was very fast and peaceful in the early days, it got more violent later as it mixed with politics.
Anyways i am finished.
