I bet he regrets that decision. It's never a good idea, when running for president, to appear to be a follower and not a leader. Whether he said it first or not, Trump owned the issue before he did. Also, I don't believe the delegate strategy is going to be that important. I believe Trump gets enough delegates before the convention.
There's a reason Trump has branded himself as a winner: people like winners. They like to be behind the winning team, they like to win. After New York with Cruz being mathematically eliminated, his campaign should be looking much more grim to his supporters. The only light at the end of the tunnel is a contested convention where anything could happen. That's not optimistic at all, and I believe this will help Trump finish up in the remaining states.
