Although none of the two children shot died, they could have. Having no gun control laws is just causing people to die for no reason. The refugees being LEGALLY admitted into Canada (and other Western countries) are of the other class. These are the only refugees which Canada has any obligation to deal with. They are legally recognized as refugees by both relevant national governments and international organizations, and are given background checks and so forth before they arrive. They do NOT intend to return to Syria and are permanent residents in the country that they are being admitted into, whether that be Canada or the United States or wherever else.
Both of those categories are completely separate from the migrants causing the crisis in Europe. About a third of those migrating into Europe illegally are refugees from Syria, from the first category, those living in camps, who want to leave permanently but don't meet the specifications. The rest of them, the majority, are people from random third world countries trying to take advantage of lax border control and international sympathy to get themselves a free apartment and a monthly welfare cheque from the kind citizens of Sweden.

Actually if you rush someone who has a gun and you have some fighting skill and strength the odds are probably on your side, considering most humans can survive a gunshot or two and most criminals don't even have proper training with guns - so there's a good chance if your moving and going full aggression immediately you can take control of any situation.
