As a former leftist I have to disagree and say that I did consciously believe those things, but probably subconsciously knew I was living in a fantasy and my own destruction was inevitable.
Basically the subconscious of the leftist is a hippy putting a flower in the barrel of the gun about to shoot him, or a monk self-immolating for some cause. You feel that you as an individual are only as good as MUH MESSAGE and that your life will be invalidated for being on the "wrong" side of history.
