The legal standard boils down to this: Would a reasonable person have thought at the time, without the benefit of hindsight, that somebody was in imminent danger of death or great bodily harm.
The court system might try to cuck you as it is not perfect by any stretch, but in most jurisdictions, you should be good to go.
Where the real court cucking will come in is the civil suit that the guy's family will probably file against you. It's not that you are guaranteed to lose, it is that hiring an attorney can be goddamned expensive.
As for the public's opinion, I doubt it would sway very many. These. A guy running inside with what looks like a gun declaring a robbery gives you and (everyone else) in there a reasonable and immanent fear for your life.
Think of the legality of self defense as a window. This window can open and close really quickly. When the retard busted in with the gun and declared the robbery, window is open to plug him with rounds. Once he's down and not a threat, or if he surrenders before you draw, (or does anything else to not become a threat), your reasonableness for shooting him goes into doubt. That closes your window.
