California does not require you to show ID to vote. You just tell them your name and they find it on the list.
I always vote by mail specifically to prevent someone from taking my vote. It's also much harder to forget if you have 3 weeks to fill it out.
However, vote by mail may be more susceptible to fraud. Or it's reverse psychology. I don't know.
Keep calling your county election office and ask, you have a right as a citizen to know what you need to do. The League of Women Voters always has a fair amount of info, they help illegals, they should help you too. You can also check with the DMV that your address has been updated in their system online, if you've registered with them.
You can also call 1-800-345-VOTE and ask. It's a hotline for voting help by the California Secretary of State.
